After Nick is murdered by his own partner, he joins the Rest in Peace Department to protect the world from the undeads. While working with his new partner, many undeads are seen gathering in Boston. Soon he realizes that someone close to him is behind all a plot to bring on the apocalypse.
Nick, a cop, gets murdered by his own partner. He joins the R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace Department), an alternate reality and a police force. They find Deados, souls that refuse to go to the afterlife, from wreaking havoc on life as we know it. Upon joining the R.I.P.D., Nick is paired with a lawman of the Old West, Roy. Upon returning back to Earth, Nick has the appearance of an old Chinese dude, while Roy has the appearance of a smoking hot blonde chick. It might be bad enough that Nick is unable to reunite with his wife, but what's worse is that these Deados will bring upon diabolical worldwide disaster. Nick and Roy must put a stop to these Deados before it's too little too late!
Originally I was well against watching this, but a lazy Sunday provided a lifeline for R.I.P.D. I like Ryan Reynolds, & Jeff Bridges, but I prefer him when he does more serious parts (Safe House etc) although he is funny. Jeff Bridges' a bit of a hero in my eyes, but my gripe with this film is that I couldn't understand 75% of what he was saying; my only other gripe is Kevin Bacon, I cannot stand the chap ever since those stupidly annoying EE adverts (not his fault, I know).
Overall, if you swap monsters for aliens you basically have MIB with a less than satisfying cast, Will Smith beats Reynolds any day.
6/10 from me not blown away, more of a gentle breeze, but gives a bit of humour that is worth watching.
I saw he trailers and wondered if the movie would be as funny, or if they had shown all the "good stuff" in the trailer. Well, I'm happy to report that the trailers captured much of the essence of the movie, but the movie itself has much more.
I don't know what some of the critics expect. Shakespeare? Hey, this is a comic book movie. It is a fantasy. It is not real and not meant to be real. But it IS also fun. It is quite possible that this movie will lose money, but that is simply because of bad positioning, overwhelming competition, and failure to deliver adequate advertising. But none of those things detract from the movie itself.
I went to the movie with some trepidation, but found it to be funny and entertaining. It was consistent with its premise and it certainly had enough action, and even (gasp) character development. There is nothing really deep about this movie, okay? But it is good summer entertainment and definitely worth seeing.
Perhaps there was a clever germ of an idea here, but the five credited writers didn't develop characters, scenarios or rules in this sci-fi world well enough to engage the audience.
