A security guard protects an eleven year-old girl who is being targeted by a gang for participating as a trial witness.
An ex-special services veteran (Antonio Banderas), down on his luck and desperate for work, takes a job as a security guard at a run-down mall in a rough area of town. On his first night on the job, he opens the doors up to a distraught and desperate young girl who has escaped and fled from a hijacking of the US Marshal motorcade that was transporting her to testify as a trial witness. Hot on her heels is psychopathic hijacker (Ben Kingsley), alongside his resourceful henchmen, who will stop at nothing to extract and eliminate their witness.
Why oh why are Antonio B and Ben K in this utterly predictable (I knew the ending after 35 minutes down to the exact scene), lame and unoriginal film? Boring, pointless and without anything new, Security is mostly the same as Denzel W's The Equalizer. Except it's not nearly as good. After Gandhi, Mr K always plays bad guys. Psycho bad guys if possible. And Mr B is a fine actor (who can forget his Puss 'n Boots? ;) ) who can really bring mystery and menace to a role. But this? It gives turkeys a bad name.
I gave it a charitable 5 only because it entertained me, somewhat. Extremely cheesy Antonio at the end, and a nonsensical plot, but I'd blame the director.
Katherine de la Rocha, the kid, had a small part in this movie, but I think she's got some skills, and I predict she's got a bright future in acting.
The plot has similarities to Jason Statham's "Safe" (2012), which does it right and I strongly recommend watching. Underrated at 6.5 at IMDb - I'd rate Safe at 8.
