After a fateful mistake costing his career, an ex-soccer player bum meets a shaolin kung fu student trying to spread the word of kung fu. The ex-soccer player helps reconcile with his five brothers, and teaches them soccer, adding shaolin kung fu as a twist.
A shaolin kung-fu practitioner seeks a way to spread the word about his chosen art when he meets a down-on-his-luck lame ex-footballer (a.k.a. soccer player) who trains him and his five dejected brothers to play, incorporating their specialized martial arts skills. They form a team and soon enter a prestigious tournament with a one million dollar prize, eventually facing an unscrupulous rival coach and his drug-enhanced players.
I saw this movie as a free sneak preview. I thought it would be the worst movie I've seen since Corrina, Corrina. It started out all hardcore, and I thought it would be your run-of-the mill horrible sports feel-good movie (Mights Ducks, The Big Green, etc.). Then, about 5 minutes in, the movie begins to add unnecessary scenes that are hilarious. Granted, I could have done without the lead female, she was filthy for no apparent reason. However, the kung-fu soccer team is the best thing I've ever scene. Watch for the guy who is able to keep the ball on his abdomen: it's pure movie magic. Shaolin Soccer may not look like much when you see the commercials, but it will be the best thing you've seen in a while, as long as you haven't seen anything real good in a while.
One of the best comedies to emerge from Hongkong in the recent past. While other comedies from China often seem childish and silly, this one captures all the qualities we love from far-east cinema: It has great, great action. It has great, great special FX (think Matrix go Berserk). It has a funny story which recaptures movies like "Major League". Now imagine this combined with all that Kung-Fu-Shaolin-Hocuspocus-Manga-Stuff you got to love watching chinese movies and japanese animes. If you like your Kung-Fu action raw to the bone, stay away from this one, but if you want to see a movie that broadens your horizon in sense of humor and martial-arts-FX, you gotta have to see this one. The combination of soccer and Kung-Fu alone is worth a movie. But "Shaolin Soccer" proves that this interesting and funny concept works without any lackluster moments. Watch it and become a fan of asian action comedies! 8/10 points!
The movie has a rambunctious and likable energy that compensates for its unsteady, only intermittently amusing narrative.
Basically there are three different versions around. First of all one has to differentiate between the original Hong Kong Theatrical Version and the Director's Cut. The latter features two extended scenes and some outtakes before the end credits and runs approx. 10 minutes longer than the Theatrical Version.
There's also an International Cut available that runs more than 20 minutes shorter than the Asian versions. More than a 100 scenes were altered. At the end of the movie, Team Shaolin defeated Team Evil and won the championship. Sing's cyclone kick scored the winning goal. This can be clearly seen on the scoreboard during the final Trophy ceremony. Although many people believe Team Evil was leading 1-0 prior to Sing's cyclone kick, this is also not true. When the Team Evil player kicked the ball into Empty Hands' face and knocked him through the goal, the ball did not enter the net. a5c7b9f00b
