An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.
Rose Cooper is an uptight and by-the-book cop whose name has become synonymous with screw-ups. She's given a chance to redeem herself one day when she is assigned to protect a federal witness, Daniella Riva, the vivacious and outgoing widow of a drug boss. As the two polar opposites race through Texas, they find themselves pursued by everyone from crooked cops to murderous gunmen. However, their greatest obstacle to making this out alive may be themselves as they learn that Cooper has now been considered a fugitive fleeing with Daniella.
"Hot Pursuit" is a buddy film about an accident prone female cop (Reese Witherspoon) and the wife (Sofia Vergara) of a criminal who will testify against the head of a drug cartel. Officer Cooper and her charge, Daniella Riva, find themselves on the run from various bad guys, but they don't like each other much.
Reese and Sofia are two of the best comediennes when it comes to light comedy, so matching them up seems like a good idea. The story, though, is rather unimaginative, so they carry the film solely by the chemistry between them. If you want to see a better film of this type, see "The In-Laws" (1979) starring Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. But "Hot Pursuit" delivers just what it promises--funny banter between the two that emphasizes their disparate styles, appearances, and accents.
We heard and read so many bad reviews, we were surprised to find ourselves engaged from beginning to end, and laughing at times like hyenas. We are sorry to hear about those who didn't get the entertainment we did out of the show.
The plot was way better than we expected, and fortunately they didn't destroy the movie with previews on TV like they do with so many movies. I admit when they started showing more parts on TV to advertise, I was concerned.
We went there to be entertained and have a few laughs. It did it for us, but we went to see a comedy, and that's what it was.
Will definitely buy the DVD.
The joyless and perfunctory Hot Pursuit would be a black mark on anyone’s résumé, but it’s an especially disheartening one for Witherspoon at this point in her career.
