Bruce Wayne is taken captive within the facility of Arkham City, a prison built in the abandoned part of Gotham City. After the prison, ran by the mad psychiatrist Hugo Strange, becomes a war zone between his greatest enemies, Bruce must stop everyone who stands in his way as the Batman.
When part of Gotham is turned into a private reserve for criminals known as Arkham City, all hell is sure to break loose, and the Dark Knight is the only one who can stop it.
I'm just going to say it...I hate Harley Quinn. I love these Batman Arkham games, they're addictive as heroin, some of the most well made video games in history with their simple gameplay, great controls, great story, awesome graphics, beautiful open world...great stuff. So when Arkham Asylum was a smash hit, Rocksteady released the follow up, Batman: Arkham City, two years later. You all know the story, you know it was now the best Batman game of all time, and the fans couldn't wait for the next game. We knew this was going to be a series and we'd get to explore Gotham and see other Batman villains we've heard about but seldom seen. Arkham City left many loose ends (Azrael, Hush, etc.,), so we wanted closure. Well, someone at Rocksteady decided to release a DLC story to follow up Arkham City...more or less. They called it Harley Quinn's Revenge. Supposedly Joker's death drove Harley further insane and sent her off the deep end, so Batman has to go back into an evacuated Arkham City to neutralize the situation. This scenario had a lot of potential and could've made for an exciting game. I don't know why they didn't want to expand it into the next game instead of making it a DLC. In another "genius" move, they kicked Paul Dini to the curb and got someone who obviously doesn't care about Batman or the Arkham series to write the story for this trite. The story is the least of this game's problems, however. The voice acting sucks, the game is too short, you can beat it in an hour, it's extremely easy and any noob can figure it out instantly. It has little to no replay value. It leaves you feeling empty! Harley is NOT a threatening villain, she's a clown. And why are Joker's men working for her now? I remember during AC, you can hear some of them say they don't like her and they'd kill her when Joker passed on.
In another short-sighted and greedy move, they booted Arleen Sorkin and replaced her with Tara Strong as the voice of Harley. I have nothing against Mrs. Strong, she's a good voice actress, but Good God was she annoying as Harley Quinn. Exactly how much helium did they require her to inhale before each take? I also don't get this character's popularity. Sure, she was a fun character on Batman: The Animated Series and added some good comic relief, but then she just exploded, getting her own comic, cartoon, I mean this girl was everywhere! So when Paul Dini wrote Arkham Asylum, he included Harley. Not a bad move as she was instrumental in starting the second half of the game. But in Arkham City, Harley was useless! Useless, annoying, just shoehorned in with a slutty new look just to give the teenagers at the controllers something to jerk off to...what, Catwoman's butt wasn't enough? Thankfully, Harley had a diminished role in AC, but Rocksteady set to right that supposed wrong by giving her a DLC. They blew it big time. There is no way you can make me believe that Harley has gone even crazier and masterminded some fiendish scheme on her own. She's an idiot! I won't buy that she escaped custody, kidnapped some cops, is leading a siege in the industrial district, built a large mechanical shrine to the Joker and even reprogrammed the mechanical guardians from Wonder City to fight like Mister J. Oh, and get used to "Mister J." She says it every two seconds! She has not gone off the deep end, she's still as big a bumbling idiot as she always was! Oh, and she has black hair now. Yeah, big difference. Also, it seems Batman is mourning the loss of the love of his life... and Talia. Seriously, we hear from Robin and Oracle that he hasn't been the same since. Really? Bats seems normal to me. Either Kevin Conroy had a cold when recording his lines, or he took it upon himself to show Batman is suffering, since the writers and programmers sure as hell didn't try, or even care.
Bottom line: Harley Quinn's Revenge sucks. The story sucks, the voice acting is sub-par, except for Mr. Conroy, and it's too damn short. Now, as for the good qualities: the graphics are great, the gameplay is decent, you start with all your Bat gadgets, the controls are simple. I like how they managed to make the industrial district look even more dark and uninviting, and you get to play as Robin. The underground network of tunnels was a nice touch too. They should have expanded this into the next Arkham game. We would have waited! At least we've got Arkham Origins coming out this Fall. A prequel, but it looks awesome. So while I definitely recommend Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, I say avoid Harley Quinn's Revenge. It's annoying, it's monotonous, it's boring, it's a waste of time. No more Harley Quinn! This character has overstayed her welcome in my opinion...Oh, and that's another good part about this game, you get to beat her up.
This is the perfect game for kids. For adults who like Batman, not so much. It was enjoyable and my first Batman game. It took me awhile to get used to the combat, and after about 2hours I pretty much had it down. It did have overpowered goons. The easy mode is more accurate to how Batman would handle the average goon. I found the riddler puzzles to be fun until I found myself 3days into the game and only 200/400 trophies down. The Strange broadcasts were extremely annoying, everything about the Riddler was highly irritating, which brought the game down tremendously. I found the Joker to be the most enjoyable villain. Gadgets were cool, gameplay was solid. I'd like to have the ability to change into a new suit without having to buy the GOTY edition. That is what is wrong with the video gaming industry. They never release full games anymore and double dip sales. The story line was satisfying, but the annoying nagging of both Hugo Strange and Riddler drove me mad. So I'm sure kids would love this game. Adults will get annoyed, and have a little fun too.
If you go right with the loot in Catwomans story, through the credits, Oracle says something about "Everyone's dead", including Batman. a5c7b9f00b
