10 years after a global economic collapse, a hardened loner pursues the men who stole his only possession, his car. Along the way, he captures one of the thieves' brother, and the duo form an uneasy bond during the dangerous journey.
Ten years after a global economic collapse, a cold-blooded drifter traverses the scorched Australian outback on a mission to track down the men who stole his last remaining possession - his car. When he crosses paths with a badly wounded member of the gang, he takes the vulnerable, naïve young man along as his unwitting accomplice.
I can guess the director must have played a lot of Grand Theft Auto games. The Rover is mercilessly violence almost to the point of desensitization, and it's downright amazing. This is far from usual action flick, presented in exclusively barren setting, it bides its time and delivers every blows unapologetically. The two leads perform splendidly, conveying rugged emotions with either less than subtle words or crude gestures.
Eric (Guy Pearce) has the displeasure of having his car stolen. Fueled by willpower he chases the group of robbers who stole the beloved car. On his lone crusade he serendipitously meets with one of the members who got shot, Rey (Robert Pattinson), a slightly mentally challenged young man. These two have the most awkward yet surprisingly fascinating chemistry.
Guy Pearce is stone cold, barely communicating his intents and when he does, he utters it in such unpleasant way. Meanwhile Robert Pattinson is a timid yet volatile man, who by his nature is pretty impressionable. If there's any criticism for his acting after certain vampire series, he more than makes up for it. Their relationship is very bizarre, united only by a common goal. It's more appropriate that they tolerate each other, but after a while this symbiosis gradually affects both of them.
Visual is a heavy reminder of Mad Max, done in outback where only sun shines and not much else. Brutal gore litters the movie, I've seen many use of violence in a movie, but this one certainly should be watched with tact. Soundtracks are also impressive, the songs are highly unexpected yet they work marvelously for the theme.
Somehow the uncompromising nature does hamper the film, the logic and also logistic are a bit implausible. It'd be better if it had more narrative or back story of the place or characters since people are so unsympathetic towards each other, it's a miracle that the outback is still populated. Everything is so strange, and while this eccentric nature has merit, but it may alienate some audience.
The Rover is a muddy arduous chase, yet it's brilliantly captivating beneath all the dust and blood.
The Rover is unflinchingly bleak in it's portrayal of a post apocalyptic Australia where society has regressed into a mistrusting and primal way of life. The world as we currently know it is gone and many of the things we now take for granted are in decline, and consequently expensive and sought after. Violence is prevalent in such a world - and a way of life - just as it has been so in the past of human history. The story focuses on Eric played by Guy Pearce. His car is stolen - and he goes about retrieving it with a violent vengeance as he discovers that Rey, played by Robert Pattinson, is the injured brother of one of the thieves they have carelessly left behind. Eric and Rey form an unlikely and uncomfortable bond as they journey towards the climax of the movie, and it is this bond that gives the story any form of hope and redemption for humanity. Pattinson is very good in his role as Rey. He plays a very simple and incredibly fragile man forced to take actions unnatural to him to survive. Pearce steals the show with his gritty performance. He is mysterious, brutal and intense. The world he lives in has hardened him considerably. But he still has love in his heart which is proved both with his relationship with Rey, and the final moment where we discover just what made him want his car back so badly. The Rover is underrated, and a triumph for Australian cinema.
Michôd’s film consciously plays like an outback western, peppered with jagged and unpredictable outbursts of hard brutality. But it could do with losing control a little more often – and with establishing the dangers of its dog-eat-dog world more precisely.
