Jake Green is a hotshot gambler, long on audacity and short on common sense. He's rarely allowed to play in any casino because he is a winner. Jake has taken in so much money over the years, he is the only client of his accountant and older brother Billy. One night, Jake, Billy and their other brother Joe are invited to sit in on a private game, where Jake is expected to lose to Dorothy Macha, a crime boss and local casino owner who can't play for squat, but always wins because people are too scared to beat him. Jake isn't afraid of Macha, and not only beats Dorothy in a quick game of chance, but takes every possible opportunity to insult the man. Jake and his brothers leave the game, and Macha puts out the order for a hit on Jake, who ends up working for and being protected by a pair of brothers, Avi and Zack, who are out to take Macha down.
Gambler Jake Green enters into a game with potentially deadly consequences.
"In order to win the game, you must know the player who knows your gameplay -- and then forget what you know, remember what he knows, and then do the exact opposite, but only if that's what your opponent is expecting you to do."
I have just seen, what i can only describe as an "interesting" movie.
The quotation i have pasted at the top is what most of the dialogue is like.
Like the other Richie films, Revolver, is slick with amazing photography, scenes and soundtrack. Sucking you in to the point where you almost believe that you standing with the cast. But this is where my praise ends.
To me it felt as if Revolver was trying to be too clever. I agree its a movie which will make viewers think and debate about it for hours on end. But unlike the other plot twist movies, such as Uusual suspects you will never reach a conclusion or even find some middle ground.
It has a story line which must have been written by a philosophy graduate high on a combination of Cannabis and Crack, and before he could actually finish it he was taken to hospital.
I have read many reviews of people claiming that it was actually very clever and if you just stopped to think it would all make sense. But in the end there are just too many unexplained mystical events such as the mysterious disease and time travelling car accident. Yes i agree that concepts such as the perfect con, magic formula and mystical enemy which makes your opponents destroy themselves are intriguing, but thats all they are.
How could Neo see when he was blind, will be the least of your worries after having watched this.
It may have sounded as if i hated this movie, but on the contrary, i actually enjoyed it. It was fun, if a little pretentious and one that you really should watch as you know everyone else will have, if not just for Ray Liota in a thong.
Snatch and Lock Stock were brilliant movies. Smart, stylish and smooth. Revolver tries an entirely different tack. It went for a bit of psychoanalysis and tries to show us the inner natures of all of us through the main characters and a bunch of gangsters.
What I felt, however, was that the movie tried too many gimmicks and none of them worked. Random cartoon scenes in the middle for no reason and which adds nothing to the story, and too many extremely cliché lines being said over and over again takes away from the movie. Like 'The greatest trick you ever pulled was making him believe he is you'. And a few others as well which kept on annoyingly repeating throughout the movie.
The main storyline, and the major parts of the movie, would have been enough to sustain interest and make a good movie. Instead this comes out as a mixed bag of used tricks. And after trying a rehash of every pop-idealized psychoanalytical bullshit and used directorial techniques possible, the movie comes across as just lame.
I have nothing against a movie trying for something new. But this one didn't succeed. Hopefully he'll have better luck next time.
Part gambling heist, part graphic novel, part metaphysical mumbo jumbo, Revolver is a mess of many colors, few of them satisfying.
