A group of bank robbers find their multi-million dollar plan interrupted by a hard-boiled detective.
A seasoned team of bank robbers, including Gordon Jennings (Idris Elba), John Rahway (Paul Walker), A.J. (Hayden Christensen), and brothers Jake (Michael Ealy) and Jesse (Chris Brown) Attica successfully complete their latest heist and lead a life of luxury while planning their next job. When Ghost (Tip T.I. Harris), a former member of their team, is released from prison he convinces the group to strike an armored car carrying $20 million. As the "takers" carefully plot their strategy and draw nearer to exacting the grand heist, a reckless police officer (Matt Dillon) inches closer to apprehending the criminals.
Everything about this film is terrible. It is a waste of time and is an example of what happens when you combine poor directing with an equally poor script. It is one of those films that once it has ended, you will soon realise what a waste of time it is.
One important feature to include with a film about robbers is the motive. Without why should they be putting themselves through such a risk. T.I enters the scene with a proposal to his former bank robber friends having been released from prison. Everyone in the team is wealthy and has no need for risking arrest. This makes no sense! The plan itself is ridiculous yet it appears the police can never land a bullet on one of them.
The characters themselves are flat and lifeless. The lack of a motive doesn't help matters. Idris Elba's character has a troubled sister and Matt Dillon and his partner also have troubles but they lack any interest and serve only as a way to draw out the running-time. Whatever happens to them by the end, you will not care.
Regardless of the story or characters, the action is where the film should entertain the audience but it fails poorly. One decent foot-chase through an office can't redeem an ambush scene resulting in a shootout. The audio is reduced while music plays in the foreground taking any excitement away. The films almost non-existent ending will also annoy viewers, making this something that should be missed without hesitation.
If there were an "absurdist heist" Oscar, then Takers would take. It is a pit of clichés: the weak link, meddling family members, troubled cops, and a love triangle. Top it all off with a camera as jerky as the San Fran earthquake, and you have one failed caper.
Five very dapper gents, with appropriately mixed races, plan a very big heist involving armored cars and underground mechanics. The trouble is, these notoriously meticulous thieves are pressed to pull off the job in five days. Not good for careful planners.
Of the things that go wrong, the only one I buy is the late arrival of a target because I've been in Los Angeles traffic, and not even a moving bank could make that congestion go away. Regardless, Detective Jack Welles (Matt Dillon) will sacrifice even his relationship with his daughter to track down these miscreants.
Knowing the thespian-challenged Hayden Christensen is a star of Takers, and you dislike nervous MTV camera work, then you have an idea what a crime the film really is. However Dillon is a treat to watch—-he has this world-weary cop down pat.
Takers is not Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956), where another five men plot a heist. The only taking here is your ticket money.
Did I mention the dialogue? Well, really the armored car driver put it best when he said, "We're in trouble here…" No joke.
