A bomb-sniffing beagle is fired from the mayor's office for a faux pas. That night a mad scientist dognaps him and injects him with an elixir. The dog escapes, but now has superpowers. He's adopted by a security guard - an ex-cop, who's a widower with a moody teen son, Jack. The boy discovers that the dog, named Shoeshine by dad, has super powers, but it's their little secret. While Underdog saves people in distress, the mad scientist and his underling continue their plot to catch him and take over the city. There's also a girl Jack likes who has a dog that Shoeshine takes a shine to. Will every dog have his day?

The dog escapes, but now has superpowers. He's adopted by Dan Unger (James Belushi) a security guard - an ex-cop, who's a widower with a moody teen son, Jack. While Barsinister and Cad plot to catch him and take over the city.
I saw the overall rating of Underdog in IMDb, I was surprised that it had such low rating. I mean, the story is simple but I had fun watching it. The story is so simple that even dummy can understand it, and there is almost no action, just the whizzing of Underdog but the presentation is good. Comparing it to the cartoon to live-action movies like Garfield and its second movie, Underdog is slightly better than them but still can improve. I somehow feel that the Scooby Doo movies are better than this. I was disappointed on how the director managed on the action, there are scenes of Underdog whizzing by and at the last part, Underdog manage to fight a little. It is suitable for children.
The story, is really straight forward, a beagle, trained to bark at bombs, barks at the wrong thing, some meat. He is then "kicked out" and he wants a home. A bad guy caught him for the mad scientist who wants to use him for experiments. But the beagle struggles and causes the whole lab to be in ruins. A kind dad takes him in and calls him shoeshine. Shoeshine discovers that he got the powers when smashing the lab. A boy discovers them too when the beagle talks. Soon, shoeshine becomes Underdog and saves the world. The premise seems interesting.
Finally, if kids are scared watching those violent superheroes movies, this one is suitable for all age. Almost at every scenes, I got to hear people laughing. It is cute and funny to kids. If you are a superhero fan, like me, should try watching this too. It is not bad but it is also not that good.
Underdog, Underrated?
Going into the theater i wasn't expecting a whole lot from this film. Im not even a fan of the 60s cartoon. I really went into this film blind with no knowledge of the show, except i did watch it from time to time as a kid. First the bad thing about this film. I didn't really see any need for the villains. They should have perished in the beginning of the film, after the experiment on underdog. The acting was also sub par, but what do you expect from a kids film? Ben Hur. Now for the good things about this film. I thought the storyline was typical but solid for a children's film. The struggle between a teenage son and his single father really touched at heartstrings in this day in age. Where we find many single parents. Even though in T.V. history and film we see most parents being single fathers ( My Three Sons, Courtship Of Eddies Father). Just to name a couple. The special effects were really good for a children's film, and we all find beagles to be irresistible. This movie scored high on just about every mark. We have seen many children's films and some that target children but are not meant for children (ala Simpsons Movie). Underdog is a sure fire film for all ages and all families. If you want a good popcorn movie that doesn't slow down and will keep even the oldest skeptic entertained this movie is it. So skip all those other want to be family films such as the Simpsons Movie and go see this delightful beagle romp. Have No Fear Underdog Is Here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you're expecting anything resembling the beloved cartoon, you'll enjoy the title sequence and nothing else. If, however, you set your expectations just low enough, or are an easily satisfied 8-year-old, you might have a bit of fun.
