I know you said it is a manual transmission but my source recommends that after 1988 use Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid (part no.AT-2-QDX) . Verify this at the place where you buy the lubricant , either an auto parts store or Ford dealer with a service department!!! Posted on May 25, 2011.

In a manual you have a gearbox, which takes 80/90 weight gear oil. You dont have to check it often and most manufacturers require you to change the gear oil every 50,000 miles. The drain and fill plug will be on the transmission itself, so you will have to go under the car to drain and fill it
