New in version 5.0: We use XeTeX as the rendering engine rather than pdfTeX (as in earlier versions). It appears that brew does not, technically speaking, install mactex. It just downloads up an installer. After it finished I pdflatex existed, though I did have to start up a new shell - I'm assuming it did something to my path. After this, on pre-El Capitan systems, pdflatex would be found in /usr/texbin, however, with El Capitan, installations to /usr are no longer allowed. However, LaTeX installation requires access to the /usr/texbin folder, at least as an alias, and it is protected by Mac OS. If you don't want to disable the rootless feature, you can just modify your $PATH to point to the location of your LaTeX installation. Mac OS X El Capitan is not for public consumption.
