When an ordinary underachieving guy named Chuck Bartowski gets an email from his old college friend Bryce Larkin he opens it to see a series of pictures called the intersect which has all of the governments most vital secrets. Now that Chuck is the most important government assets in the world the CIA and NSA get their top agents, Sarah walker(CIA) and John Casey(NSA). Full of action packed fighting (not so much of Chuck fighting) and a whole lot of Chuck finding a way to save the day, using the intersect of course but somtimes the help of friends. And that's Chuck for you.
Since geeky Chuck accidentally became the mental host of the Intersect, an unprecedentedly powerful computer mind containing all information available to the US government, he's a primordial national security asset and risk. So CIA and NSA each appoint a top agent to guard Chuck, and often get involved with him in spy adventures. Meanwhile his identity must be kept secret from Chuck's sister, her perfect partner Devon, both surgeons, and Chuck's goofy colleagues in Buy More, the Burbank electronics store where he works as a cover.
Chuck is the story of a big box employee who works for the technical repair team called the nerd herd. Chuck had been on the fast track to success at Stanford before being sidetracked when he was expelled for cheating (though he claims to be innocent and we are inclined to believe him) after being turned in by his roommate. Several years later the former roommate is now a rogue CIA agent who copies the contents of the CIA's super computer which is stored in the form of visual images, before he destroys it. Just before he is killed he emails the contents to Chuck who downloads the information in the form of the visual images to his brain when he opens the email. Later he discovers that visual triggers can cause him to "flash" a process by which he can recall data related to that image, which is very useful to the CIA and others but also potentially dangerous should Chuck choose to abuse this information.
Thus it is decided by both the NSA and the CIA that Chuck must be watched in case he has flashes and also for the obvious security reasons. He is assigned two minders/bodyguards; include Major John Casey (Adam Baldwin) who once again confirms his great ability to combine humor with his imposing physical presence, and the beautiful Sarah Walker (Yvonne Strahovski) a potential friend or love interest. The main cast is rounded out by Chuck's sister Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) with whom he lives and his best friend/co-worker Morgan (Joshua Gomez).
The series has a good cast that has good chemistry and a talent for comedy, which extend beyond the 5 primary characters to the fairly large supporting cast. As a result we get some wonderful comic moments, effective action scenes (at least for a television series) as well as good character development (resulting in characters the audience can connect with). Finally the big box store/shopping mall setting is a great choice for a setting and not one which has been overused
Chuck is everything we've come to expect out of NBC lately. And in case you were wondering, that's not a good thing.
Chuck, on the surface, has everything NBC likes: it's is attempting to be hip, edgy, young, cool, fill-in-the-adjective.
Sadly, it fails to deliver on every level, except maybe as a campy parody of itself.
The main complaint is that it is painfully unfunny, to the point of being irritating because as an audience, you can tell there's supposed to be a joke, but you're not laughing.
At worst, Chuck's reliance on trite clichés makes it insulting.
Now, it's not like this is a big surprise.
The two producers behind this train wreck have a track record of mediocrity behind them. Josh Schwartz was the creator of the much-hyped but ultimately very unsuccessful The O.C. and also created Gossip Girl (DOA at the Nielsens would have been a better title). McG is his usual producer and the man responsible for the artistic disaster of Charlie's Angels.
NBC keeps betting on the wrong horses (see Bionic Woman, Journeyman, Friday Night Lights, etc...). Chuck is one more wrong horse.
