to be packed regardless of suit (as in Beleaguered Castle, a later offshoot of Fortress) and allowing any rank to be selected as the starting rank for the foundations (as in the variant Chessboard). There is nothing wrong with these games, but Fortress provides a very challenging game when played by the traditional rules.
Type of Deck, Standard Deck. Foundation, Four piles at top. One card is dealt face up in the first Foundation pile. Tableau, There are 18 Tableau piles arranged in three rows of six piles each. All cards are dealt face up and fanned, such that all cards are visible. The first five piles of each row start with three cards each.
At the start of the game, all the cards of one deck are dealt to eight piles, four on the left and four on the right. Six cards are dealt face up to each pile, while the Aces are placed in the middle to start four foundation piles. These foundation piles are to be built up in suit from the Aces to Kings.
3 Dec 2002 Tips. Increase the rank of the cards at the top of the suit stacks (in the options window) if you are unfamiliar with the game. Try to obtain an empty space early in the game, then move a king to the empty space and build on that.
21 Nov 2008 Top tips. Try and clear a row as soon as you can, then move a king into it. And be sure to think as far ahead as possible. How evil will I become? Beleaguered castle won't make you evil, but if you're already an insane, cackling genius, you'll probably be quite good at it.
