When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
The second war against the Cylons is over, and The Twelve Colonies have been destroyed. Now Commander Adama of the Battlestar Galatica and President Laura Roslin lead a ragtag fleet of refugees in a supposed search for the fabled lost thirteenth colony, Earth. However, the dangers they face are many, which compound an already difficult situation. In addition to the Cylons hunting and attacking the fleet in space and their infiltrator units carrying out sabotage--even as their former unwitting pawn, Gaius Baltar, helps in the hunt for them while hiding both his own guilt and the strange presence that haunts his every thought--the fleet also faces internal political conflict in which the rabble-rousing figure Tom Zarek is merely the loudest dissenting voice, not to mention recurring shortages of food, water, and even oxygen. In the midst of these trials, however, clues begin to appear to suggest that Adama's bluff about finding Earth might hold more truth than anyone could have guessed.
If you read the reviews there are those that complain that this show is an insult to the original.
These are two different shows. I am glad they didn't just remake the original. Then you would have another group of people complaining that no one does anything original on TV.
The original show was fun and I enjoyed it when I was a kid. However if you really look at the characters of that show they where very one-dimensional. The battle sequences where the same in every show. I really doubt people would behave like they did on the original show when humanity is on the brink of extinction. Yet it was fun.
The new version is almost an alternate universe. The characters have more dimensions to them. Surprisingly for a sci-fi show it is not the special effect action sequences that you look forward to. It is the character interaction and the plot twists. It is truly more of a drama than a sci-fi show. The pace of some of the episodes almost feels like "24".
I am trying not to write any spoilers but there is an episode with the Pegasus just like the original. But in order to add drama they turn everything upside down by making Cain outrank Adama in the new version. The tension just builds and builds until it looks like both sides are going to battle with each other. Just brilliant. I saw the original Pegasus episode again and the remake within 1 day of each other. It is great how they where able to make such a different version of the original episode.
Star Trek did something very similar but both versions where really so close to each other. (Both the television show and the movies. Actually it is amazing how a movie like Khan could be turned into such garbage in Nemesis.) I rank the new Battlestar Galactica up there with my favorite sci-fi shows ever. Each have there own appeal.
Babylon 5 - Showed what a sci-fi show could be when you didn't have the magical reset button at the end of each show. Minor things in the 1st season would be relevant in the 4th season.
Stargate SG1 - Just pure fun. Doesn't take itself to seriously.
Farscape - Some of the purest sci-fi out there. Really enjoy seeing the puppets over the CGI. Kind of sad that my only fix lately is to watch the main stars on Stargate.
Battlestar Galactica - Awesome drama that has a mix of X-Files and 24 to it.
The first season of Battlestar Galactica was terrific.
The second season was really good.
The third season was good.
The fourth season was terrible. Absolutely terrible. The creators lost their focus and turned out episode after episode of drivel. What had been one of the most extraordinary story-driven shows in the history of TV turned into a character drama -- but these people were never characters. What made them, and the series, so powerful is that they were archetypes. They each stood for a different kind of human behavior pattern, and we watched as the actors each played out that behavior in the face of a catastrophic event... and a compelling plot.
Then, in the last season, for no good reason, the show places character over story and goes so far off the rails that it basically becomes unwatchable. These were never real characters. Abandoning all semblance of plot at this point made no sense at all. The show fell apart.
Such as shame to see a show go from almost perfect to unwatchable.
And finally: just a note about the deservedly despised ending: on top of all the other mistakes...um...well... they set almost 40,000 people from an advanced civilization free on earth in 150,000 BC and expect them to live for more than a week? What are they going to eat? Where are they going to live? How are they going to survive all the infections and other hazards of life back then in BC times without medicine or guidance? And on top of that, there is no fossil record of all their metal technology whatsoever in the history of archeology, but science is able to trace their lineage back to microscopic mitochondria?
And finally finally, that last scene in contemporary Times Square with Caprica 6 and Gaius may have been the absolute last worst three minutes of a show in history. And then with the final camera shots, it all turns out all the show was ever really about little mechanical toys from Japan that will some day destroy earth. Yeah.
They should have ended the show in season 3.
Yes, although it's producers call it a "reimagined" series, due to some slight differences. A battlestar is a very lage spaceship, kind of a cross between a battleship and an aircraft carrier. Cylons are humanoid robots created by mankind as servants and laborers. Eventually, they rebelled and declared war on their human masters. Miniseries - This 3 hour miniseries acts as a pilot for the weekly series and introduces the characters and situations.
Season 1 - Contains 13 episodes.
Season 2 - Contains 20 episodes.
Season 3 - Contains 20 episodes.
Battlestar Galactica: Razor - This 2 hour TV movie ( officially the first two episodes of Season 4 ) takes place during Season 2, with flashbacks to the miniseries and earlier, but should be viewed here.
Season 4, Part 1 - Contains 10 episodes ( also known as "Season 4.0" on DVD ).
Season 4, Part 2 - Contains 10 episodes ( also titled "Season 4.5" or "The Final Season" on DVD )
Battlestar Galactica : The Plan - This is a post-series prequel TV movie which depicted selected events of the miniseries and series from the Cylons point of view.
There are also two spin-off prequels:
Caprica - A 19 episode prequel series set 58 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica. The series deals with the creation of the Cylons, and stars Eric Stoltz as Daniel Greystone, creator of the Cylons, and Esai Morales as Joseph Adama, father of Battlestar's William Adama. Released on DVD ( and Blu-ray in certain territories ).
Battlestar Galactica : Blood & Chrome - A 2 hour prequel movie that is set during the first Cylon War, 40 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica and around 18 years after Caprica. The story follows a young William Adama ( future commander of the Galactica ) as a new recruit in the Colonial Fleet, and shows his first experience of battling the Cylons. Released on DVD and Blu-ray. Yes, the miniseries acts as a pilot, and sets up all of the events, characters, and themes of the series.
