After a cyber attack to a Chinese nuclear facility and to the American commodities market, the governments decide to hunt the blackhat together. Colonel Chen Dawai is assigned by the Chinese government and he meets the American Carol Barrett and Mark Jessup in Los Angeles. He invites his sister Chen Lien and he discovers that the hacker used a computer code developed by his old MIT friend Nick Hathaway that is in prison for stealing money from banks. He requests that Nick joins the team and they have to travel to China following the lead. Along their journey, Nick and Lien fall in love with each other. However they can not discover the motivation for the attack and Nick has to do a risky move to find the location of the hacker. Will he succeed in finding who is the responsible for the attacks?
A furloughed convict and his American and Chinese partners hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta.
For an action movie, Blackhat's overall plot is not really bad. The first half of the movie is quite tedious and monotonous as Hathaway and company chase after the hacker from one place to other without any mysteries or tensions. The conflict starts in the second half of the movie after Chen and others are killed by the hacker's minions (I don't expect that to happen). I feel that the movie only begins after the second half of the plot.
I love the fact that this movie takes place in several countries like China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. I can see many cultures and wonders that I have never seen in those countries before. However, it's too bad that most of the camera shots of this movie only focus on the close- up shots of the actors' face, leaving most of the surroundings blurry. Moreover, the camera shakes a lot that makes it difficult to focus on the movie.
The dialogues and the acting of this movie is quite good. I'm just disappointed to see that some of the dialogues are delivered monotonously that reduce the tension of this movie. Overall, this movie is not really bad.

"Blackrat" is a great thriller with a complex story, great camera work and several locations in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malasya. The plot is not simple to be followed and maybe this is the reason why there are negative reviews of this movie. After six years, Michael Mann shows that he is still in great shape. My vote is eight.

The film is a snarl of contradictions, starting with the discrepancy between Mann’s obsessive demand for realism and the consistently implausible screenplay.
