When weilding a shield you give up damage, so you want to have some other tool for being effective. This is where taking some controller focused options are very powerful. IMHO you need a lot of feats to make an effective sword and shield fighter in Pathfinder, due to the lack of a threat mechanic. You really need to be able to dish out damage to make the enemies not want to avoid you. Not that you were suggesting it, but I think there is no point in getting your AC up to 50,
