Our hero, Cooper, awakes to find himself nauseous, weak and covered in webbing, hanging from the ceiling of an office where, just minutes ago, he started his new job. As he struggles out of his slimy prison he comes face to face with his opponent - a grotesque, powerful and very angry bug. All 3 ft of it. And so begins a hideous, nail-biting, comedic, all-action adventure to find a safe haven while constantly outwitting an infestation of monstrous proportions. As Cooper embarks on his journey, he befriends a ragtag group of survivors including Sara, a feisty determined female. Will they make it to safety before they are picked off one by one? And what other surprises are in store for our group of unlikely heroes?
A slacker awakes to find himself weak and wrapped in a webbing; after realizing that the world has been taken over by giant alien insects, he wakes a ragtag group of strangers and together they fight for survival.
The ending suggests that the producers may have run out of budget during the filming. "OK, listen up, everyone. We have run of out of money, and there will be a slight change of plan. Throw away today's script, and let's just have someone say something stupid after which we cut to the end-credits. OK?"
The movie starts off well, fast-paced and relatively fun, then slows down inexplicably (money for the bug effects ran out?). It almost grinds to a halt at times, which is rather unusual for this kind of film. There are moments of ambivalence regarding as to whether this was supposed to be a comedy or whether "we should just do the horror without the cheap laughs". As a result, neither the comedy nor the drama worked particularly well. But then again, horror comedies are very rarely funny. Just look at "Shaun of the Dead"; to some (desperate) viewers that is practically a milestone of this more-or-less failed genre.
And may I ask what the point was of the Asian woman? She shows up, does nothing, is left behind to tend to the cocooned people, and that's it.
Brooke Nevin is quite cute. That's at least something.
Every now and then a movie comes along that you can't quite understand how it got made. This is one of them. The only place I have ever seen this advertised is Play where I bought it on a whim. I thought it was a Trauma movie but the production values are quite high.
The story is fairly standard but deviates enough not to be main-stream, the CGI are very good but not up to block buster status, it is witty but not obviously funny, the acting is very good but no A lists are in it. It seems the only demographic this film is aimed at is... well, me. Seeing so many positive votes I am obviously not alone in my tastes. 8-)
There are plot holes, many which are plastered over with single lines of scripts and considering how much action there is not an actual lot happens.
The closest I can get to pigeon-holing this film is saying it is akin to an American version of Shaun of the Dead.
You can pick it up for peanuts and there is much, much, much ,much worse filling up the SCI-FI market.
