Dr. Evil returns from space just as British spy Austin Powers learns on his honeymoon that his wife is a fembot in Evil's control. Back on the singles scene, Powers discovers he's impotent because Evil has used a time machine to return to the late 60s and steal his libido. British intelligence also has a time portal, so Powers goes back to 1969 to recapture his mojo and, teaming with agent Felicity Shagwell, to stop another Evil plot to take over the world, this time with a "laser" beamed from the moon. Subplots involve Evil's son Scott's discovery of who his mother is, Evil's affection for a clone one-eighth his size, and the machinations of an obese Scot named Fat Bastard.
2 years after he awoke after 30 years in suspended animation and he defeated his nemesis Dr. Evil from detonating a nuclear bomb in the core of the planet, sex-obsessed 60's British secret agent Austin Powers, still on his honeymoon, learns his wife Vanessa is a fem-bot, created by Dr. Evil to assassinate him. But for Austin it is about to get a lot worse when Dr. Evil travels back through time to the year 1969 and he steals Austin's Mojo (Austin's body-fluid that makes him attractive to the opposite sex) leaving Austin shagless. Travelling back into 1969, Austin teams up with sexy CIA agent Felicity Shagwell as both Austin and Felicity must not only recover Austin's mojo, they must also stop Dr. Evil from wiping out Washington D.C. with a laser gun Dr. Evil has constructed on the moon. Can Austin defeat Dr. Evil again?
For every sequel movie, a decision has to be made. How close do we keep it to the original? Too distant is quite a creative risk which might result in a financial failure. Too close will lack the spark of originality that drew people to the first film to begin with. For example, "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" was good but a little more gory and added dumb characters (the kid and the singer) who didn't do much. They then fixed those elements for the 3rd film and added the interesting father relationship, a risk but it made the 3rd film an equal of the first.
Austin Powers 2 is perhaps the most risk-averse sequel I have ever seen. The film is so close to the original that each scene can be fitted to a gag in the first movie. I started to count the exact matches and gave up somewhere around 20. And -- in a fine tradition of Saturday Night Live -- typically the repeated jokes are not worth telling twice. Frankly I was shocked and disappointed given how original and compelling the 1st film was that they didn't take any risks with the 2nd. The failure is even worse than the failure of "Wayne's World 2" to live up to "Wayne's World", another Mike Myers film.
To go from worse to worst, the cast did not seem to really be trying, especially "Seth Green" (Dr. Evil's son) whom I have recently forgiven due his role in the new movie "Rat Race". A parody can't get buy simply by chaotic lampooning -- there needs to be an underlying story and tension to the parody film.
Who should see this film:
-- nobody, but do go see the original if you haven't
I am forced to give "Austin Powers 2" a 4 out of 10. Skip it even if you feel obligated by the coolness of the first one.
The plot once again is daft and while Heather Graham is really pretty she isn't quite in the same league as Elizabeth Hurley. That said, it is a fun, witty and sophisticated "shagadelic" sequel, that is literally like a lava-lamp lampoon that is stupid and as sophisticated as the first film. It isn't as good as a film to the first, but I think where it is improved from its predecessor is that it is more relaxed in style. Once again, the sets and costumes are gorgeous to look at, the soundtrack is funky and takes you back to the period and there are many moments of sparkling wit in the script. The film also moves quickly while being more relaxed at the same time. The performances from Mike Myers, Michael York and Rob Lowe are top notch too. Overall, a tad inferior, but a fun sequel nonetheless. 8/10 Bethany Cox

According to an alternate ending to the first movie, it is said that Number Two survived falling in the fire, but was "very badly burned". Hence the scar on his face. It appears so, Vanessa is revealed to be a fembot in the opening scenes. What's more Basil Exposition explains that she was actually a fembot all along so Austin never even met the real Vanessa. However this presents the difficulty that we see Vanessa chatting to her 'mother' Mrs Kensington, Austin's old friend and crime-fighting partner, on the phone? a5c7b9f00b
