Chapter 3 - Meet the team
What was going on here? Battlefield? I don't understand. What are they talking about? Now I was even more curious about what the people working for Mann Co. actually were doing for a living. The two employees were done with their small talk and were heading back to the group. I kept hiding behind a showcase as they passed by and hoping they would not see me. And lucky me, they didn't. While hoping they would not turn around, I sneaked to an other part of the hall to pretend I hadn't been listening to their little conversation and instead been busy learning more about the companys history. I also pretended to see them going back and headed towards them.
- Everyone. I want to introduce you to our own Soldier! He is one of our more.. enthusiastic employees. He is a big part of our crew and a big part of the company, Miss Pauling said.
He gave us the same salute as Miss Pauling greeted him with when he arrived a few minutes ago.
- It's very nice to meet you. As said, I'm Mrs. Wilein and these are my daughters, Juliet and Heather.
He looked at me and if I'm right I could hear Soldier mumble "may the lord be with us..". I could wrong but as soon as I heard it, Miss Pauling tried explained to my parents that Soldier wasn't much of a talker.
- Why don't you come along with me, Mr. and Mrs. Wilein? We have coffee in the staffroom. I'm sure the girls wants to meet the rest of the crew. They will just go along with Soldier. The evening pass is just about to begin and afterwards they will be escorted to their homes, for as long as they stay, by their guardians. I'm sure they'll be fine.
- Well... I guess we got to go then. Have fun girls, and don't forget to call every week! dad said.
I reached out to hug him, but he backed of.
- You know how I feel about saying goodbye and sad ways to say it, he tried to excuse.
- And I think you'll be fine. No need to hug me either, mom said.
To be honest, I never really liked my parents. All though, this was hurtful. We were suppose to be away from home the whole summer and we wouldn't be able to see each other for a while. This was like an arrow to the heart and I was on threshold of crying. With no further ado and no asking why, I turned around and saw both Soldier and Miss Pauling showing the same weird facial expression. They looked surprised again, but this time they both looked like they had something to say. The weird thing was that I knew what they wanted said. "This is wrong". And they were right. Miss Pauling almost looked like she would hug my sister but tried to refuse because that would be awkward for everyone.
She followed my parents out of the hall and closed the door behind. Even the silence could not hide the unspoken words. "This is wrong".
- So, Mr.. What's your name again? I asked Soldier as my sister, he and I walked along what looked like an endless corridor.
- My name? Some people refer to me as "Mister Jane Doe". But please, just call me Soldier.
- Why Soldier? Are you an old marine or something? I asked in curiosity.
- No. But I bought my own ticket to Europe to fight the Nazis in World War 2, he told me.
- That's splendid! my sister cheered. So you killed Nazis?
- I sure did, cupcake! And now I'm married to the battlefield.
I was confused, so I just had to ask:
- But wait. World war second ended in 1945! I'm not saying you're young, but you don't look THAT old!
- Watch you tongue, missy. But you are right, 1945 is the year and I'm not over 60 years old. All I can say is that I fought to kill Nazis.
- But, sir! That means y-
- We have arrived, privates. Let's meet the team.
He opened a door to a pretty large room. It was painted red and it almost looked like a classroom. In the middle there was a rather large table. Around it there were seven men. All dressed in very odd, different looking uniforms. And just as the Soldiers uniform, the main color was red.
- Everyone! I found the recruits, Soldier yelled.
And was I surprised? No. Everyone had that surprised "wtf" look on their faces. Really? To my relief, all the sudden everybody started cheering and screaming "It's a girl!" while laughing and waving their arms around. One of the men, or rather a boy, walked up to us.
- 'Eyy! How's it going? I'm Scout, the toughest and fasted guy you ever saw, and am I glad I can look at a girl fighting. I mean, Miss Pauling is hot, but she only helps the Announcer all the time. Welcome to the team, he said laying his arm around me before continuing:
- I assume you already met the Soldier. This is Heavy, Scout said and pointed at the absolutely largest man in the whole room.
- I am Heavy weapons guy, he said with a thick Russian accent.
- Then we have Engineer. Texas accent. Real smart guy, he builds machines and stuff in like 10 seconds flat! And over there we have Medic. He heals us and stuff. That's Spy, he's a real rat. And that's Demoman.
He pointed him and I saw that he was asleep, but Scout explained that he was drunk.
- It seem that your sister 'as already meet la Pyro, the one called Spy said with a French accent. I looked and I saw someone, dressed in what seemed to be a fire proof suit, playing peak-a-boo with Heather. Suddenly, Pyro rose and pulled out something of its suit and pointed it towards her. I panicked and screamed.
- Whoa! What's up with you, girl? Scout screamed back.
- Calm down Nelly. It's just a lollipop, Engineer said.
- I zhik you zould come wiz me, schätzchen. You seem exhausted from ze long journey. I'll zake you to meine office, the Medic said.
I agreed and went along. Yes, I felt exhausted, but I would like to hide from the embarrassment a while, so everyone could forget. What a wonderful first impression I've manage to make. Lovley.
- How are you feeling, schätzchen?
Medic had told me to lay down on a stretcher in his office. It was a long way up to the ceiling and the windows where high placed, way to high to reach them. Except for the late daylight they assigned there were a surgical lamp hanging right above me. I saw pictures that looked like X-ray photos of some ones ribcage. There were allot of what I assumed to be medical equipment around me. And.. Is that a fridge??
- I'm fine, I think, I answered
- Let me have a look az you, the doctor said and took one of his glows of to cheek my forehead if I had a fever. He also checked my blood pressure and putted a thermometer in my mouth.
- Ale you a leal goactol? I tried to ask although I still had the thermometer in my mouth
- Sorrie, schätzchen, I can't hear you. Lez me help you.
He took it out and I tried again.
- I said, are you a real doctor.
- Well no, I losz my medical license years ago. Buz... I can fix zhaz little mozion sickness you appear to have catched.
He reached over to a machine in front of the stretcher. As he turned it on, I heard a mildly buzzing noise and I saw a red, almost glowing smoke searching to reach me. I was ready to jump right of the bed, but I looked at Medic and his smile told me that everything was fine. I laid still and the smoke reached me. It was like a strike of lightning hit me. But it didn't hurt. It filled me with the power of a thousand suns and felt like I could take on anyone. I felt superior! I could feel how it repaired and made my whole body stronger at once. I was amazing. He turned it off and asked:
- Feeling better?
I was just about to answer his question when somebody knocked on the door.
- I'll get zat, Medic excused.
He went to get it and I could hear two voices greeting each other. Than I heard to pair of feet coming this way. Medic had company. A man with a hat, glasses and a vest came towards me. He looked at me with a smile and said:
- Hey there, mate. I'm Sniper, your new mentor.
