Chapter 7 - List of tasks - Part 1
Finally I could hear the footsteps going down the stairs. Such a dormouse.
- Morning, sleepypants. Did you have a good nights sleep? I asked.
Sniper gave me a strange look. Something that I would translate as "Not amused". Without answering he walked over to the fridge. He was dressed in a white tank top and a pair of flannel pajama pants. And on top of that he wore a orange housecoat. He picked out a pack of milk and put it on the table. Waddled over to the coffee machine and poured a cup of coffee. And went back to the table.
- So, kid, we need to clear some things up. First, I'm not a morning person. I woke up early today because I have some chores to do. Second, I actually don't like kids. Especially when they don't listen. Is that clear?
- Yes. But I think I have to clear some stuff up to. First, I'm sixteen and more likely an adult than a kid. Second, you need to lighten up, I said with a mischievous smile.
My mentor smiled back and said:
- Oh yeah? Try to lighten up with a bullet between your eyes! You need to listen to me during my lessons. Otherwise you might have to go to Medics office again, with a less minor injury this time.
I froze in the thought of laying on Medics stretcher and covering the sheets with my own blood coming out of a bullet hole placed somewhere on my body. I shook off the thought and asked:
- What kind of chores are we talking about?
Sniper locked up from the paper he was reading.
- Some grocery shopping, I need more bullets for private use, bandages. Oh! And I need to stop by at Scouts house. His mom needed help with a "bird problem", what ever that means.
He turned his attention back to the local news. I hesitated for a while.
- Um... can I come with you? I can help you carry bags and keep you company, I said.
Sniper looked at me.
- I'm not much for having company.... But sure, why not.
First task: Grocery shopping.
We parked the van as close to the entrance as we could. Which wasn't so hard considering there wasn't many people grocery shopping this day. We picked a shopping cart and entered. Sniper picked up a lined paper out of his pocket. I tried to take a peak. Eggs, bred, cheese. I assumed it was his shopping list since it was filled with words about food.
- Where are we heading first? I asked.
- First of, we're going to the meat and...
He stopped for a while.
- Know what, kid? I might be able to do this task faster by myself. Why don't you... Why don't you go get something you want, put it in the cart and then wait for me outside by the parking? Sound like a deal, mate?
- Sure, I'll be right back, I said.
I wasn't up to start an argument. Neither complain. Besides, I wasn't that thrilled to walk around with him for about an hour.
So, what do I want? What do I like? Hmmm..... Oh! I know! I headed my way over to the candy department. I knew what I wanted and exactly where I would find it. I grabbed a bag and rushed back with brisk paces to my mentor. I held the bag right next to his ear and said:
- Here. I want this.
He turned his face my way and his nose almost touched the green bag I showed him.
- Jelly frogs? he asked out loud in surprise. He took it from me and started to inspect the ingredients writhen on the back.
- They're my favorite. They're all I want.
Sniper, who had pulled his sunglasses down to the tip of his nose to be able to read the text easier, turned his attention back to me again.
- Sure.. Why not. Will you wait for me outside then?
- Absolutely, see you soon, I said and left.
I can't say there where allot of " action" outside. There where a mother who filled her car seats with screaming and rowdy children dressed in soccer uniforms. A man who dropped his bags full of liquor bottles. Even that old lady you always see when you go outside. You know, the one who always complains about today's youth and looks at you like you're some kind of demon.
I picked up my cell phone and checked the time. 14:34. He had been in there for about half an hour now. Sigh.... What is taking him so long? I was on my way back in again when I noticed a group of boys who was in about eighteen years of age. I froze on the spot when I saw him. He wore totally different clothes today though. A grey hoddie and a pair of lose fitting jeans. The only things he hadn't switched or changed was his dog tags and his baseball cap. Scout stood there, hanging out with his friends. Every one of them where kind of cute, but he totally
stood out in the group. He was taller and looked way more athletic than the other boys. I caught myself steering at them when I noticed that one of his buddies pointed my way and said something that looked like:
"Scout? Ya know that chic?"
I just managed to catch a glimpse of Scouts inquiring facial expression before I hid behind the pillar next to me. Hope he didn't see me! Hope he didn't see me!
- Hey there, Juliet!
Fuck....
I looked up and there he was. With his right hand against the pillar and the other on his hip. He had that comical boyish smile on his lips that whispered "caught you now".
- Oh.. Hi, Scout. Didn't see you there.
I didn't know why I even tried to play cool since I knew he could see I was lying.
- I think you did and that's why ya keep steering at my gorgeous body, he teased me.
I couldn't help that I blushed and tried to hide my face as much as I could so he wouldn't notice.
- Ma' told me that you and Aussie are coming over later today, he said.
- Yes, that's right.
- Well... For your own sake I hope you are a good gamer. Scout vs. Juliet! How does that sound?
I smiled.
- Comical. The fact that you think you can beat me in what ever game is kinda funny, I answered with a challenging tone
- Oh yeah? Ya think?
- Positive.
- So it's on?
- You bet! Anywhere, anytime.
We didn't notice how close our faces where by now until one of Scouts buddies called:
- Yo Scout! Are you done making out with your girlfriend or what?
We broke the eye contact and pulled away from each other. We both blushed. And after what seemed like ages he finally asked:
- Hey, Juliet? Can I get your number? We could text now and then, if you would like to.
- Yes! Sure!
I pronounced every single character as clearly as possible so he wouldn't spell anything wrong.
- Thanks! I'll text you later so you'll get my number too, he said and walked over to his gang again.
Okay, knuckleheads, first one to the baseball court wins!
They all ran of. Scout shouted:
- See ya, Juliet!
Of course, he was the fastest of them all. I watched them as they all disappeared behind the corner of a brick building.
They where gone.
I keep steering at the same corner for who knows how long, when I suddenly felt something poking my back.
- I'm the BLU Spy and I just backstabbed you. You're now paralyzed by the pain and will never be able to walk again. You've let the hole team down! Sniper said.
I could hear him smile when he said:
- Come on, mate! There are still some task left on my list.
Finally I could hear the footsteps going down the stairs. Such a dormouse.
