Young agents Carmen and Juni Cortez are now full fledged spies at the OSS agency but only as Level 2 agents. When a top secret, all powerful device is stolen, the brother sister duo set out to retrieve it. Their mission takes them to an uncharted island where they must take on a duo of rival Spy Kids and a horde of strange monsters. Only then the Cortezes realize that their mission is all a set up to lure them into a trap. And little do they know is that their parents are also on their tail.
Exploring the further adventures of Carmen and Juni Cortez, who have now joined the family spy business as Level 2 OSS agents. Their new mission is to save the world from a mad scientist living on a volcanic island populated by an imaginative menagerie of creatures. On this bizarre island, none of the Cortez's gadgets work and they must rely on their wits--and each other--to survive and save the day.

Rodriguez is talented, that talent centered on his abilities as set/art/production designer. When you have one of these film polymaths, they almost always have a single skill, a sole imaginative strength that their other roles support. Orson Welles for instance was a great visual narrator. Rodriguez isn't as novel, but comes from much the same place. He envisions scenes and marshals everything to pull them off with resources at hand.
The comparison with Welles isn't too far off at least with the first `Spy Kids.' While producing good old entertainment, he did take the time to dip into some examination of fabricated narrative. The whole thing with Artificial Intelligence goes pretty deep: Floop was an early lisp object system, and many such obscure references were used in his apparently offhand story of films artificially influencing imagination and behavior.
Along with that were some pretty imaginative sequences embedded as preteen fantasies.
But this project has none of that. None of the novel imagination. None of the self-referential subtext. No real fun, just an amusement park ride producing the predicted barf.

ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS is the second of the SPY KIDS franchise from director Robert Rodriguez and every bit as silly and juvenile as the first, unfortunately. The kids from the first film return to contend with a new bad guy and his army of sinister science projects. There are weird creations, monsters, and even a couple of doppleganger clones at one point. Sadly, it's a film that suffers from a lowest-common-denominator script and plenty of absolutely appalling CGI effects, particularly the WILLOW-inspired sea monsters, which I'm astonished to see in a mainstream film (apparently because it's a kid's film, it's okay to include them). The only interesting part of this, for me, is the chance to see cameoing adult actors, including the welcome likes of Bill Paxton, Danny Trejo, and Steve Buscemi, but their presence isn't enough to make this anything other than juvenile nonsense.
Though slightly lacking in the warmth of the first, should no doubt please audiences.
