Fueled by remorse and vengeance, a high schooler named Terry McGinnis revives the role of Batman. Under supervision of an elderly Bruce Wayne, he fights crime in a harsh futuristic Gotham.
Bruce Wayne a.k.a. Batman is in his 50's and has created the ultimate Batsuit but is no longer fully able to do the job so places the suit away and vows to never use it. Several years later and into the next century there's a new breed of criminal terrorizing Gotham City but Bruce has kept his vow. Terry McGinnis, a teenager whose father was killed because he was going to expose criminal activities at the company that he works for which just happens to be Wayne Enterprises. Terry comes across Bruce as he was being beaten by some thugs, he takes him to the mansion and he discovers the Batcave and the Batsuit; he takes the suit to get the people who killed his father. Afterwards Bruce decides to make him the new Batman and train him.
I have read comments stating that Terry McGinnis aka the new Batman is too feminine and that in 2050, people will prefer the original classic Batman. That is utterly untrue and extremely debatable. Just cos the new Batman look and sound more realistic than the old, does not mean that he is an icon of the new era of metro-sexuality. Just cos he lack the same overstated bulky shoulders and extremely lean legs that any woman would envy, does not mean he is feminine. The new Batman is wittier and doesn't state the obvious like the original Bruce Wayne. What can I say, Bruce Wayne was a grumpy, ultra-serious guy who was facing a midlife crisis. He couldn't keep a girlfriend, he felt cursed; he was destined to be alone. But in the new Batman series, he has matured, and accepted that. He is older and wiser. He has finally felt comfortable in his own skin.
The new Batman is here to stay. I am definitely a supporter of that view. I am one of the unfortunate ones. Living in Australia, I was not lucky enough to watch the 3rd season of the series. I wanted to buy the DVDs, but they are unavailable in Oz.
Terry McGinnis embodies the new generation. With the drugs and gang culture that surround the now generation, he is one that one can relate to. He also doesn't take the new generation as fools as the previous Batman did, with stating everything.
Batman has been humanized. Cos that's who he is: a human wearing a suit, fighting for justice.
This series has been done very well, and to correct some misconceptions of those who only saw the first episode or two, there is no "rebirth" of the Joker. They are reading too much into the last scene of the second episode. The series is logical in its approach to the material, and the only thing even similar to Akira or Blade Runner is some of the set design and the futuristic setting, both of which work well. The show is typical of the quality since Bruce Tim started (which is very good). Oh, the figure formerly discussed actually became a lot more like the current Lex Luthor than any other DC character currently being used (although not enough to be considered a recreation). I would rate this above Sub-Zero, below Phantasm, and above all but the '89 movie.
"Batman Beyond" takes place about 40 years after the "New Batman Adventures" series. At the time of the show's release a precise date was given as 2039. Meaning Bruce Wayne quit being Batman in 2019 (as seen in ''Rebirth''). This also means the episode, ''Epilogue'' takes place in the year 2054. a5c7b9f00b
