Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is desperate to prove that the hottest video games from ENCOM were stolen from him by a former co-worker, who is now a senior executive there. However, Flynn's efforts are made fruitless by ENCOM's Big Brother, the megalomaniacal Master Control Program. One night, the MCP catches Flynn in an attempted hack and pulls him into the virtual world. Flynn finds that the MCP is making life in the virtual world just as, if not more, miserable as in the real world. Flynn's only hope is to find Tron, a heroic independent system security program, and help him destroy the MCP to bring order to both worlds.
Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as Master Control and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron to outmaneuver the Master Control Program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game.
Set in today's world. Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is a hacker who writes programs to break into a corporation's security program, as it is noted for stealing programs. In the background, Ed Dillinger (David Warner) has been using the Master Control Program to steal all kinds of secrets and pirating programs to figure out what they have.
Flynn is friends with Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) and Lora (Cindy Morgan), fellow programmers. Bradley has written a top-level security program known as Tron, which has gone missing. Bradley gets Flynn into the corporation late at night one night, and Flynn gets zapped into the system, where he must play in the deadly games where programs are pitted against each other. (Fabulous computer graphics for the primitive technology!) Some of the games include deadly disks, lightcycles, Paranoids (the tank game), and lightball.
Flynn must learn to work with Tron, and also must master his abilities as a User to destroy the Master Control Program to get out and survive, and to bring Dillinger to justice.
Let me start off by saying for a movie that was made back in 82 I got to say I loved the visuals even if I was only born in 1994. The film is good like a lot of people are saying it is. The score for the film is good, the visuals were good and the acting was decent for a movie made back in the 80's. The film opens up great with the main characters. We meet our hero and our villain we even get to see a little bit of the computer world a little early on which I found to be really great to show. While the opening was great, the middle was just OK and nothing what I was expecting or hoping for to be honest with you. The problem with the middle is that it drags on far to long, there was not enough action. The story was just not going anywhere and at this point you really didn't care to much about the characters, except for Flynn and maybe Tron himself. The middle was really the only thing I didn't like about the film and like I said it dragged on to long. But that is only a small nitpick compared to the rest of the wonderful and beautiful film, it's no wonder why this film is loved so much by the fans it's because it did something that no other film back then dared to do. Tron is a very good film that only suffers from the middle half, if you like good movies then you might want to look at Tron. Now bring on Tron Legacy.
Dazzling but lightweight epic about a young scientist kidnapped into a computer, where he battles an evil master control program that runs the place like an electronic fascist. Has some tantalizing moments, as when computer-generated characters debate the religious question of whether users really exist. In the end, though, it's squarely in the old Walt Disney tradition of anthropomorphizing everything in sight, only this time it's circuits (instead of cuddly animals) that look and talk like people.
