Set in 1944 Italy, the story of four black American soldiers who get trapped in a Tuscan village during WWII.
Christmas, 1983. A New York postal clerk, a Buffalo Soldier in Italy in World War II, shoots a stranger. In his apartment, police find a valuable Italian marble head, missing since the war. Flashbacks tell the story of four Black soldiers who cross Tuscany's Serchio River, dodging German and friendly fire. With a shell-shocked boy in tow, they reach the village of Colognora. Orders via radio tell them to capture a German soldier for questioning about a counteroffensive. In the village, a beautiful woman, partisans that include a traitor and a local legend, the boy, and the story of a recent massacre connect to the postal worker's anguish forty years later. And the miracle?
Everyone has been ranting on this film for a while due to the Spike vs. Clint issue, but if you take this without Spike in mind, this is by far a great, GREAT movie. The cinematography takes Spike Lee back to his roots and brings out such beautiful shots and beautiful sequences that you rarely see in movies. The acting was fine, nothing spectacular, but the direction of Spike Lee made this movie something worth seeing. I can tell how white people will take offense, (i'm white) but to be honest, in 1944, the plot was exactly as to what these black soldiers were going through, so open your eyes and minds and realize racism was huge 60 years ago. I can't tell you how much I loved this film, just watch it on your own. Spike Lee deserves to be nominated for best director hands down. A great movie, 160 minutes just flies by. If you're a nerd white boy like the guy next to me at the theatre, you might leave early and go watch Eagle Eye cause that movie is so cool, but if you've got an open mind, stick through it, as this movie just teaches you so much.

Spoiler There's probably one of the best moments in film history in which the story doesn't drive you, but the shot does. Just remember after they go to the ice cream parlor, and the shot of the 4 soldiers and the little boy looking into the camera. (its in the trailer). This is one of the greatest shots EVER! Beautifully crafted, and a GREAT GREAT movie.
Rent it. Buy it. Watch it every year.

AMAZING MOVIE!!!! I can't understand the negative reviews. It's an amazing movie. This is a prime example of why not to listen to critics. A complex and touching film. Don't read the reviews, be your own judge.

I am trying to build a tradition around Memorial Day that involves watching a movie that carefully portrays the sacrifice made by those we are supposed to remember on this holiday. I just watched Miracle at St. Anna and have decided to add it to the list alongside Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, etc. The story of those four soldiers and the people they encountered is powerful. Fighting for your country when your country doesn't have your back is something I can't imagine and yet it happens. So many have been in this position, faced it and died. It brings tears to my eyes. Everyone should see this movie. Everyone should answer the question, "how can I put an end to racism?" and then act on that answer.

Even in a film that clocks in at a quasi-epic 2 hours and 40 minutes, that's just too much narrative. And matters aren't helped by the fact that Lee, who has never staged battle sequences before, hasn't quite got the rhythms or camera angles right.
Miracle at St. Anna is also a 2003 novel written by American writer and musician James McBride. Those who have both read the book and the script say that several themes in the book have been enhanced for the movie. The supernatural aspect has been muted somewhat, but the religious Christian aspect has been made more pointed for characters on all sides—Bufflo Soldiers, Italians and Germans. Other details were also changed. For example, Hector didn't earn a purple heart but a silver star. Rudolfo recognizes the fact that he's going to get shot and doesn't seem to have come to terms with it. (In the book, he doesn't realize until the last second what's happening and is a little more OK with his fate.) Hector barely ever looks at who comes up to the window. In the book, he looks, notices a flashy ring, and then looks to see whose face it is. (This is important to the story because it is this small detail that makes the viewer/reader realize that the Black Butterfly has exacted his revenge from beyond the grave.)
