The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee.
Ip Man's peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family's honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San.
first of all, the movie be titled with a plural "s", i.e., "the grandmasterS" instead. as the purpose and its storyline as well as the scenarios did not concentrate or focus on just one person but to paint a larger picture of who's who of those Chinese kung-fu masterS in that era. but the director had to use two characters as the narrators to move the story forward. secondly, this movie is a poorly edited movie, with bad script that almost shattered the movie from the very beginning and most of all, it's so pretentious through and through. i just couldn't believe that Wang has spent so many years to prepare this movie yet achieve so little. the fighting scenes were poorly divided into two different styles, when yip fought miss gon, and when miss gon fought ma san, Wang turned the actress into a fashion show model, especially when she fought ma san at the train station, in a mink? what a joke! and when gon fought yip, he turned gon and yip into two ballet dancers. Wang paid too much attention to beautify the scenes and overlooked the believable reality. Wang also wrongly cast the actress to play miss gon, as zhang's fragile image simply won't allow the audience to buy such willowy actress being that tough and strong-minded female kung fu master. the whole movie is just like a American blanket sewn up by lot of American old wives and the whole blanket turned out to be a mess! when tried to mingle a Chinese martial movie with a subtle romance, Wang just did it poorly and inevitably made these two fields both skin-deep shallow. to Wang, it seems that cinematography is more important to anything. he's always tried so hard to paint a beautiful scenery oil painting with so many colorful touches but in the end, it's just a very shallow and even hollow mirage. he tried to tell too much and too many, but the viewers and/or the listeners only got the least part of it.
Someone actually started snoring in the theater but when I looked over my shoulder they stopped so I guess they were joking around and after I realized that I thought they had clever timing... unlike this movie. I've seen the other Ip Man movies and if in fact his existence did occur than he had a rather un-illustrious second half to his life which this movie portrays.
Love lost and love undiscovered in a country that historically favors separation,there isn't a lot of pity for the key players by the audience.
The dialogue would be typical of a Kung-Fu movie if there wasn't 15 minutes of emotional build-up prior to the "You fight with me!" tag-line, I'm swearing off this director and everyone involved in the film except Ziyi Zhang who played Gong Er; she was quite delightful but only for about 20 minutes near the end.
I honestly wish I could get my money back, I thought it was a loss of 2 hours in my life with no redeeming qualities; definitely not made for a Western audience :(
The film, more likely to invite comparisons to the writings of Marcel Proust than the previous Ip Man films, is a gorgeous folly that never entirely emerges from its creator's head.
