Ashamed of his savagery during the French and Indian War, Benjamin Martin decided he would sit out the American Revolution, while his oldest son Gabriel enlisted minutes after South Carolina joined the fight. He changes his mind when his house is burned down and one of his children is killed by the savage Green Dragoon commander Colonel Tavington. Quickly realizing that traditional 18th century warfare tactics won't work, Martin organizes militiamen into a guerilla unit to harass Cornwallis' army long enough to allow the French to arrive.
Benjamin Martin is a South Carolina planter who is still haunted by his notoriously brutal past as a soldier in the French and Indian War. When the American Revolution comes, he chooses not to fight for the Continental Army because he wants to protect his family. But when the British Colonel Tavington threatens their welfare and kills one of his sons, he chooses to enlist. Martin becomes the leader of a makeshift militia, which consists of peasants, slaves, a minister, and assorted other irregulars. During the war Martin and his men discover that they will pay a steep personal price for their rebellion. But thanks to their courage and bravery, they are also destined to pay a pivotal role in turning the tide against the Redcoats.
This is a top action-drama story with equal amounts of human relationships and war, plus a hint of comedy (I think the running bit with the chair is very effective).

I think special commendation should go to some of the supporting cast in this story for really giving it a lot of personality. Well, Tom Wilkinson would probably prefer to be called a co-star, but anyway he definitely give his character the right amount of political intrigue and ambition as the English general, while still finding room for some humour and other sensitive qualities - so his character's not totally two-dimensional. And Peter Woodward as his aide-de-camp I thought was a very fascinating character, holding together the scenes he figures in with real panache (the best being his entrance with the captured "officer"). And finally I would like to point out Trevor Morgan who plays the third son Nathan, as really making his character both humorously and dramatically successful.
I think I could count on the fingers of one hand the times when a film has actually brought a tear to my eye; and this film is one of them. (Yes, I'm usually the hard, cynical observer who knows all the tricks.) But both the scenes where the son gets shot, and the one where the girl finally decides to speak to her father managed to finally choke me up. It's probably because they're the type of characters who are trying not to cry and do it anyway, as opposed to the usual soap opera sort who will pour on the waterworks at the slightest provocation.
This certainly deserves its place in my top 100 movie list!
This was definitely an epic, nearly three hours in length and patience. It wasn't so much that the movie failed, it was just that the movie did not reach its full potential. The Patriot attempted to cover many issues while telling the story of a man caught between war and family. The cinematography was beautiful while the story line was predictable and corny at times. I think the filmmakers covered all bases on this movie including every war cliche and one-liner possible. Great movie, poor film.
Emmerich might have had a masterpiece, but he'll have to settle for what comes close to being a must-see movie today.
For three reasons: (1) The officers would be more experienced in defending the column that was escorting Gabriel to prison. They'd be better able than those lower in rank to fight off an attack by a single man and two boys. Additionally, officer training is more intense and involved than basic training, and they would be more knowledgeable in combat tactics. (2) With the officers dead, the other Redcoats in the column would find it harder to organize themselves into a single and effective fighting unit to repel the attack, as we plainly saw happen. So, without the officers yelling orders to the lower ranking soldiers, it was easier for Martin to mount his attack successfully. (3) Targeting officers specifically was not a standard military tactic at the time. It was not part of the gentlemanly code of warfare and would cause upset and confusion when the Rebels used this tactic. Yes and no. We're probably suspending some of our disbelief for the sake of the story—the scene is an excellent opportunity to introduce us to Martin as a great guerrilla warrior. Also, he had the advantage of his two sons already being excellent marksmen, having taught them that specific skill. With their elevated position on the nearby ridge, they had a huge advantage. Additionally, Martin had extensive knowledge of the area near his farm and the terrain therein. He chose the spot specifically for its cover by the natural flora (trees, shrubs, etc) and the ridge where he planted his sons to act as his snipers. This is a technique employed by marksmen, especially with less accurate weapons such as the muskets and other muzzle loaded weapons that were used during the American Revolution. What it means is the smaller the target you aim at, the smaller the chance of missing the larger target. For example, if the boys were to aim at an officer, they could miss him. But if they aim at a button on the officer's coat, they may miss the button, but they'd still hit the officer. As suspected by many people, the "new" Extended Cut features mostly scenes that were first used as deleted scenes for the old DVD release. Now these passages were re-integrated into the movie, adding up nearly 11 minutes to the movie. No. As with most films of the genre, it is fiction based on/inspired by true events. a5c7b9f00b
