Five friends separated by working life are reluctantly reunited by their teenage leader (the childish Gary King) in an attempt to finish an incomplete pub crawl from their youth. Only to find out that the town has been replaced by robots who are the only thing standing in their way to reach The World's End.
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World's End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind's. Reaching The World's End is the least of their worries.
I was curious to see the two end-of-the-world comedies from 2013, and wondered which one would have the upper edge; Rogen's or Simon's. This one does, though not by a large margin. "This Is The End" has a better premise (I prefer the Bible's Armageddon to alien-invasion), but TWE has a much better cast, better dialogue, a better ending (TITE ruins its with the f-ing Backstreet Boys), less gags that bomb horribly, and it doesn't have either Rihanna or Cera in it.
Simon Pegg co-wrote this, and he has come a long way both as an actor and a writer since those fairly modest and mediocre "Shaun of the Dead" days; I found that movie unfunny and vastly overrated. "Paul" was a drastic improvement – if mired by bad Hollywood influences that prevented the film from reaching its full potential. And now this; an all-round very good effort with great visuals, a good story, and something very rare in comedies (even good ones): a great ending.
In fact, TWE gets better as it goes along. From that mediocre prologue all the way to the wonderful dialogue with Bill Nighy as the Head Alien, the film gets improves rather than lose steam as nearly all comedies tend to do.
If I were to look for flaws, I'd pick out the English obsession with pubs (which I find neither cute nor funny, merely idiotic) which infiltrates yet another UK comedy – but also the predictable barrage of drunkenness gags that go with it. Dunno, perhaps as a non-drinker I am not equipped with the necessary experience to laugh at stupid beer gags. And yet, Frost is such a good comedian that he even makes the age-old "drunken-guy-flailing-about" comedy cliché work. He does in fact steal the show from the other guys, as I thought he would.
I love the notion that humans are too stupid to have achieved the technological revolution of the past few decades without outside help. This is the main reason why the ending is such a hoot.
As long as Pegg keeps teaming up with actual actors (non-Schwimmers) and competent directors (non-Schwimmers) and doesn't waste his time collaborating and making garbage with Hollywood incompetents such as David Schwimmer, Pegg could yet improve even on this film. I suppose he wanted the money; why else would anyone who strives for quality want to make a movie with The Swimmer – that imbecile from "Friends"? Exactly.
Does this hold up to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz? Hell Yeah! I just saw this movie and I want to see it again right now. I will probably end up seeing it in theaters again soon. It has smart quick one liners that leave you laughing even after the movie is over. The acting is the best I have seen yet from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, especially from Simon Pegg. I really thought this movie was visually the best out of the other two. The special effects are really well done and they took there time on them. They never brought you out of the movie, which I can't say with some other films. I really wish this movie was longer, not because it felt rushed, but that I wanted more Frost and Pegg. Now what to say about the directing from Edgar Wright? It was the best directing I have seen from him yet, especially the fight scenes. He has this thing with fight scenes and I think he does them so well. I want more fight scenes in the movie just to see Edgar shine with them. I completely recommend you go see this at the theater if you like their other movies. Even if you have not seen them and you want to see a good comedy, then just go see The World's End.
As a film whose central theme emphasizes the dangers of living in the past, Wright, Pegg and Frost become fatally distracted by nostalgia, eventually paying too much homage to previous classics—especially their own—to create another film that deserves to stand alongside them.
More info here. In Shaun of the Dead, the color of the cone's packaging is red to symbolize the bloody nature of the film. In Hot Fuzz, it's blue to match the color of a police uniform. In The World's End, it's green to symbolize alien beings. a5c7b9f00b
