In a standard comic book dystopian near-future, Americans are ensconced in Mega-Cities which protect them from the desolation of the world outside, and the peace is kept by the Judges. This elite group who upholds the Law is police, jury and executioner all in one. Judge Joseph Dredd, the most formidable and revered of the Street Judges, is convicted of the murder of a snooping reporter. With the help of a prisoner who he himself convicted, Dredd sets out to clear his name while leaving a trail of destruction, snappy catchphrases, and dazzling special effects in his wake.
In a dystopian future, Joseph Dredd, the most famous Judge (a police officer with instant field judiciary powers), is convicted for a crime he did not commit and must face his murderous counterpart.
Frankly I was appalled by this film. How could they? What possessed them? Why, at some point during production, or even upon reading the script, didn't somebody put a stop to this disaster. Anybody that had ever read the original comics couldn't fail to realise that they were annihilating this superb imaginative idea with one poorly written, hopelessly crafted turkey. Instead of creating an original interpretation of one of the most popular underground works of imaginative fiction in the past 3 decades, the production team decided to pull various plots at random from the comics (the angel family), take these beautifully crafted plots and subject them to 20 minutes of poorly written film time and then destroy them forever. In the hands of somebody like Tim Burton we could potentially have had years of cinematic viewing pleasure as a veritable gold mine of material is available for a series of films. After that shambles though (and I don't even blame Sylvester Stallone)(much) there is no way. The Judge Dredd series as conceptualised in 2000AD and its own franchise publications is a triumph of dark humour and satirical grittiness. The film was a commercial copout that shows a complete lack of respect for the subject matter and the viewing public as a whole. I truly believe that everyone with a stake in the production of this gut churning rot deserves to rot in an ISO CUBE for at least 25 years.

The execution of this movie felt more appropriate mid-80's than mid- 90's. I expected more from it. First off, those costumes. Really?! Judge Dredd's costume looked very flimsy and weak; like an obvious prop. That led me to pick apart other parts of the movie. Such as the futuristic vehicles and their tacked on accoutrements. Never looking as if they were from their own world but yanked from reality. The comedic one-liners were so bad. All blatantly related to being a judge or the legal system. Something the writers quickly came up with one night after a few cocktails. I grimaced more than chuckled and each one followed a dialog pause so each one was telegraphed. Onto the plot and I'll admit I have no idea this was a comic book until the movie started. The Earth has become a desert and people live within crime-ridden, walled cities with a police force called The Judges. They are allowed to stop criminals as well as judge their crime and punishment at the scene. Of course there is a battle for power and shenanigans are pulled that effect Judge Dredd's reputation. Will he overcome and will the truth be uncovered? Overall, the was a lot of popcorn action and bad dialog but it was brainless amusement nonetheless. The best part about watching it was getting to clear a movie out of my streaming queue that I had light interest in seeing after 20+ years since its release.
He later elaborated: From what I recall, the whole project was troubled from the beginning. The philosophy of the film was not set in stone - by that I mean "Is this going to be a serious drama or with comic overtones" like other science fiction films that were successful? So a lotta pieces just didn't fit smoothly. It was sort of like a feathered fish. Some of the design work on it was fantastic and the sets were incredibly real, even standing two feet away, but there was just no communication. I knew we were in for a long shoot when, for no explainable reason Danny Cannon, who's rather diminutive, jumped down from his director's chair and yelled to everyone within earshot, "FEAR me! Everyone should FEAR me!" then jumped back up to his chair as if nothing happened. The British crew was taking bets on his life expectancy. a5c7b9f00b
