Shakespeare it ain't! However, it is a loud,action-packed diversion and it is lots of fun. And I,being long out of my teens and a Detroit muscle car enthusiast to boot,wasn't supposed to like it!
The plot is a bit on the thin side,but it is basically just an excuse to bombard the viewer with a cool,thumping soundtrack and lots of shiny,fast,little cars. I found myself liking these characters,particularly the girls. Both Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriquez did a fine job as very strong young women,each in her own way. Vin Diesel was likeable as a character that was reminiscent of a Hollywood version of Jesse James or Robin Hood. Paul Walker did well in his portrayal of the young undercover cop,who is torn between love and duty. I also found Chad Lindberg's portrayal of Jesse,the young genius whose potential is never fully realized,to be touching. Certainly,having the talented Ted Levine aboard,as the voice of reason,lent an air of credibility to the whole proceedings. This man always shines,even in the smallest roles.
Some of the plot was disturbing,such as the treatment of truck drivers,but it was apparent that the world of modern day street racing was well researched,by writers and actors alike. The terminology was up to the minute and if all else fails,just holler,"NOS!" There were definitely times that one had to suspend disbelief,but all in all,I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes cars,a flashy soundtrack and a fast-paced movie! Pure fun,all the way.If you think that this movie is only for the male population ladies, think again. This film, The Fast and The Furious, had its female points of interest as well as the male points of interest. If you still don't believe me, go out and see it, it is worth the money the theaters are asking us to pay now.The result is an intensely involving entertainment that can be enjoyed by viewers who scarcely know how their own cars work.LAPD undercover cop Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) infiltrates the world of illegal street racing in Los Angeles in order to find evidence connecting gang leader Dominic "Dom" Toretto (Vin Diesel) with hijacking trucks and stealing over six million dollars' worth of merchandise and electronic equipment. His job is complicated when he begins to fall in love with Dom's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), finds himself questioning Dom's involvement, and begins to suspect a rival group, led by Johnny Tran (Rick Yune). Meanwhile, his superior, Sergeant Tanner (Ted Levine), along with FBI Agent Harry Bilkins (Thom Barry), are worried because truck drivers are beginning to arm themselves, so the FBI is planning to bust Toretto in 36 hours. The Fast and the Furious is loosely based on a May 1998 Vibe magazine article about illegal street racing, "Racer X", by Ken Li. The article was adapted for the movie by American Samoa-born filmmaker Gary Scott Thompson (screen story) and American screenwriters Erik Berguist and David Ayer (screenplay). The movie has since been followed by seven sequels: 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) (2003), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) (2006), Fast & Furious (2009) (2009), Fast Five (2011) (2011), Furious 6 (2013) (2013), Furious Seven (2015) (2015), and The Fate of the Furious (2017) (2017). After aborting the heist, Brian calls for a life flight for Vince (Matt Schulze), surprising Dom when he identifies himself as an LAPD officer. After the helicopter has taken Vince to the hospital, Dom, Mia, Leon (Johnny Strong), and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) drive off together, leaving Brian on his own. Brian drives his Supra back to Dom's house to find Dom standing in the driveway with a shotgun, intending to go look for Jesse before Tran finds him, but Jesse drives up in his father's Jetta while Dom is still ordering Brian to move his car. Suddenly, Tran and Lance (Reggie Lee) drive by on their motorcycles and begin shooting. They miss Brian, Dom, and Mia but kill Jesse. Brian jumps in the Supra and goes after them, followed by Dom in his Charger. In the chase that follows, Dom forces Lance off the road, and Brian shoots Tran. Dom begins to flee, but Brian pursues. They race each other for the railroad tracks, narrowly escaping a passing train, but Dom barrels into a truck, rolling the Charger and injuring himself. As police sirens draw closer, Brian hands the keys of his Supra to Dom and says, "I owe you a 10-second car." Dom nods and drives away. A 10-second car is one that can run one quarter mile in 10.999 seconds or less from a standing start. To do that, it would need to be travelling at about 135 miles per hour (MPH) at the first quarter-mile mark. Acceleration is not constant. Coming off the line, it should reach 70 MPH in 3 seconds covering about 60 yards in the process. The teaser trailer, featured on the DVD release of the movie, features the song "9 Teen 90 Nine" by Limp Bizkit. The second theatrical trailer features the song "My Way", also performed by Limp Bizkit.
