An elite team of soldiers has been used against terrorists where they use astounding physical capabilities to overcome them. Victoria, a reporter, follows them and discovers a part of their secret. When one of the team kills her cameraman she tries to escape. Luc, one of the soldiers begins to have flashbacks and turns sides and helps her as the remainder of the team follows to protect their secrets.
Private Luc Deveraux and his sadistic sergeant, Andrew Scott, got killed in Vietnam. The army uses their bodies for a secret project - reanimating dead soldiers as deadly obedient cyborgs. However, their memories come back too.
It's quite underrated here and in general movie opinion. It's got all the excellent action requirements; off-your-seat fast-paced scenes, some blood, some humor and good screen-play. As far as the acting is; well it is quite poor. Van Damme is in it, so what do you expect? Besides that, Its got quite an intelligent script behind all the cameras, and they executed right in the movie. The average Van Damme fan will like this movie, as we get to again see his full-filled material arts and some of his un-funny, funny humor: if that makes any sense. In general it's an underrated action classic that began to set-foot in Van Damme's acting career.
Universal Soldier (1992)

Vietnam soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren) kill each other but in the present day both are brought back to life by the government as a secret experiment meant to create the perfect killing machine. Both men eventually regain their memory and the Van Damme character heads off with a reporter (Ally Walker) with Lundgren right on their trail. UNIVERSAL SOLDIER has several interesting ideas but in the end they really don't add up to too much and we're left with a standard action film with some not-so-memorable scenes. I remember watching this back in the day as I was a big fan of the two stars and I found the film to be a disappointment and my memories of it rang true when watching it today. I think the story itself is a pretty weak imitation of ROBOCOP with the exception here being that we have dead soldiers being used for the perfect killing machine. The explanation given for them isn't all that memorable but I guess we really shouldn't expect too many brains from a film like this. Both Van Damme and Lundgren really seem to be sleepwalking through their roles as neither one brings too much life or energy to the film. I get that the Van Damme character was meant to be more quiet and laid back but this leads to a pretty boring road trip with him. Walker is certainly charming in her bit as the reporter and we also have Jerry Orbach picking up a paycheck. The action scenes are nice to look at and we get some pretty bloody violence but this isn't enough to keep the film entertaining all the way through.
It's a bad memory trip through the wasteland of movies past, swamped with bonehead dialogue, stock parts, cookie-cutter romance and gunked to the gills with generic techno-drool. [8 July 1992]
