The viscous couplings are sealed permanently and require no maintenace. The only additonal maintenance items required are changes of 1) the front differential oil (GL-5 90 weight, same as the rear) and 2) the transfer case fluid which is ATF. All drivetrain fluids should be changed at "Inspeciton II", nominally at 30K miles.
You know, "remove the front caliper", the Bentley manual has many steps and pictures and mentions the installation torque values. BMW also requires one to purchase their Torque Specification manual. 12 Jun 2014 The transfer case was outdated before it was released, but its simple mechanicals allowed BMW to set up a permanent rear-wheel bias to ensure the car still drive like a BMW. When things got loose and wheels started to slip, the viscous differentials would kick in, locking anywhere between 10 and 100%
It involves installing washers as shims in the front drivetrain near the guibo to force more of the front driveshaft into the transfer case and thereby provide 50% . Transfer case removal is well documented in the Chilton's manual, and it only took about 2 _ hours (really!) to pull the exhaust, rear driveshaft and drop the unit.

So, I stupidly tried to install a short shift kit yesterday on my '88 325iX without having searched for iX specific instructions first, and no matter how I manipulated my hand I couldn't even come close to reaching the linkage. So, now I realize that I need to remove the transfer
