You maintain it by doing normal actions that increase sanity, wear items that give you a sanity regen, or play as Maxwell's who's sanity regen is high enough to negate it. Normal spider nests still spawn in the caves, so you don't have to eggs with you. With all the spiders, you might eventually get a surplus of silk. I only used my tents when my sanity got around 150.
