Years after the Black Mesa Incident (from the original Half Life game), the mysterious G-Man summons Gordon Freeman from his induced slumber. Placing him on a train, Gordon finds himself in "City 17", one of an unknown number of 'urban centers,' where humans are kept in an Orwellian pseudo-slavery by a mysterious alien race known as the Combine. City 17, possibly located in eastern Europe, is overseen by Dr. Breen, a former administrator of Black Mesa who, after arranging the surrender of Earth to the Combine, was rewarded with a leadership position. Humans are now half-way oppressed by themselves. Prisons, concentration camps and urban centers alike are controlled by the Combine Overwatch, members of a somewhat voluntary military in which participation is rewarded with various benefits such as with better living conditions. People are also attracted to it because they would like to feel like being part of something greater then themselves, and also because they can get away with physically abusing, tormenting, and killing the civilians. A resistance stirs in the shadows... a large system of underground railroads are in place. The populace is on the edge of total rebellion. What they need is a little inspiration, and a little push, and Gordon Freeman may be just the man to provide it...
After previously causing portals to open between worlds, Gordon released a race of aliens from enslavement on Xen and was placed into stasis by a mysterious figure known only as the G-Man. Meanwhile a race of aliens known as the combine enslaved Earth and is devouring its resources. Freeman awakens on a train heading for a massive city known only as City 17. The alien Combine empire watches over its human minions from a massive fortress called the Citadel, within which the human governor is none other than Gordon Freeman's old administrator, Dr. Wallace Breen. Uniting with the resistance fighters which contain some of his old acquaintances from the Black Mesa research facility (such as Barney Calhoun from Half-Life: Blue Shift), Gordon leads the resistance to free mankind with the help of the creatures he liberated from Xen, and the Antlion controlled with pheromones. After the fall of the first fortress G-Man places Gordon back into stasis.
I didn't initially play Half-Life 2 when it originally came out, since I wasn't old enough to play the game at the time. I finally did play the game in 2008, with the release of the Orange Box on the Xbox 360. And after I played the game for several days and beat it, all I could say was "wow". I had heard all the hype, but still I was blown away by the great story telling, game play, and vastness of the world, that made you feel immersed.
Strengths: The story, writing, and characters are some of the best ever seen in a game, by the end I found my self really caring about Alex, her dad, and the main character Gordon Freeman, among many others. I hadn't played the first game, but the plot basically is that after the black mesa incident that release aliens called the combine onto earth in the first game, they have taken over, and Gordon Freeman must join with the resistance and topple the combine. Overall great dialogue, great atmosphere, particularly in the ravenholm level, and a world filled with such detail it immerses you totally in the experience. The game play may seem a lot different since we've had the COD type shooters since this game came out, but the shooting is fantastic, and the gravity gun is easily on of the best weapons in all of video games. The graphics also feature great facial animation, and detail in the world, and the environment is huge with tons of variation in the combat, which includes great vehicle sections, and weapons that feel like they pack a punch.
Negatives: There's only two real negatives I can think of, one is the fact that Gordon Freeman never speaks, which I got over pretty quickly, but for a game made in 2004 you would think they would give Gordon some dialogue, but its not to big of a deal. The second is the ending which felt somewhat abrupt when I first played it, but after playing the two follow up episodes of Half Life 2 it doesn't bother me as much, as the first time.
In conclusion, Half-Life 2 is one of the best game ever, it helped advance storytelling, graphics, and game play in video gaming, and I think this game shows critics of video games that games like this, Shadow of the Colossus, Bioshock Infinite, and The Last of Us, help show the true potential video games have as a storytelling medium. Overall 10 out of 10, even with some very minor complaints.
First of all getting so many awards shows straight away that this game has really pushed the boat out and has evolved first person shooters for ever. The Graphics are so life like, it's creepy. Even at low resolution they are very well done. Valve really hit the nail on the head. If you're wondering what steam has to do with this, it's the internet programme that stops people copying the software which I support as it ruins the industry. Steam also automatically upgrades the game and keeps all you're information stored in its online databank. A very useful tool. Anyway back to the game. It's not just the incredibly graphics, water, sky and physical effects. It's also the Artificial intelligence. It's amazing. They will think before you and are able to solve puzzles and re position to kill you quicker than you, so it will keep you on you're toes if you chose the hardest setting. I mean the fact that AI can now work in groups its just astonishing. also the other great thing that makes this game such a success is the mix of hard fast hitting action, slow creepy moments and the ingenious puzzles laid out like how to lift a ramp for the air boat by putting air tanks underneath it. The last thing and most important thing about it, is its story line and characters. The voice acting is superb and not faltered in any way. Plus is so much more here's a gun kill aliens, its emotion on the characters faces and this world of despair and small hope you get sucked into. One of the best games I have played in years, Definitely 10 out of 10.
