Guy Pierce character, without any remorse, stalks the three men who stole his car and left him abandoned. He acquired another car. Why find these men and retrieve his car? There are clues during the film for the end of the film where the answer to this question lays. During the film the main character sees dogs mistreated and shoots the man who mistreated them. This act was cleverly attached to a theft of a gun but once the end of the film comes, the watcher will understand. Also during the film the main character sits in an area where dogs are kept and shows a fondness for them. Now the ending. He opens the trunk of the car and retrieves a shovel and his (I suppose) dead dog. All along his pursuit was to show an act of kindness to his friend, his dog. "Man's best friend", and bury it.
Ten years after a global economic collapse, a cold-blooded drifter traverses the scorched Australian outback on a mission to track down the men who stole his last remaining possession - his car. When he crosses paths with a badly wounded member of the gang, he takes the vulnerable, naïve young man along as his unwitting accomplice.
We find ourselves in a lawless land. Without any explanation as to how it got to be as is, it is quickly established that laws have become lax and every person owns a gun to protect themselves as some kind of human jungle has come to prevail.
The story focuses on one man. His car is stolen by a group of bandits and tries to get it back. During an encounter he makes clear that he is prepared to die to get back his car. The reason remains hidden. After being knocked out the rest of the film is about this man's pursuit of the bandits.
In this wild, gun ho world, he makes an unlikely ally in the form of a half-witted young man. It is a battle for survival with the occasional moments of human interaction, moments that occur under the auspices of basic instincts where death could occur at any given moment.
Appropriately filmed in a desert-like area this is a visceral experience with enough rawness that is engaging and stimulating.
In a world where animal instincts are allowed to prevail, how can one survive, trust and move forward?
Such a wonderful film... I loved the part where Guy tells the 'trooper', he was hurt that no-one came after him for the murders... magic!
I knew Rob P was good, and had been wasted as an actor. But this showed how truly good he can be. He craps on a lot of the pretty boys around.
Actually, this character's styling is the best I've ever seen Rob look. The pared back hair made his features look a lot less distorted, over-pronounced, and caricature-like, than they do him up as in films we've seen him in up 'til now.
I really enjoyed every minute of this, and was easily able to gloss over the gaping holes that showed up here and there.
I can absolutely see every character's POV, and that's what stuffs you up here. There is no right and wrong, and everybody's doing the best they can according to how screwed up they are. Just like the real world.
A movie filled with melancholy and mania.
Michôd creates a good deal of ambient menace in The Rover; Pearce has a simmering presence. But I felt there was a bit of muddle, and the clean lines of conflict and tension had been blurred: the dystopian future setting doesn't add much and hasn't been very rigorously imagined.
