Ah, this brings back the memories.
This was one of the scariest movies I saw when I was young, and one of the best adventure/d&d movies. Some of the scenes were truly gruesome, especially the big monster bloke with the beating heart. I still remember grimacing as the hero puts his hand on the tree and one of the baddies fires an arrow into it, and when Talon is attached to the cross and has to pull his hands with big nails in them out. Ouch, that gave me the heebygeebees. Classic stuff for kids, although I nearly died with embarrasment (watching this beside my mum at the time) when Talon is being chased through the castle and crashes into the bedroom filled with beautiful bronzed naked women.
9/10 as a kid, but the cast do know it's trash and ham it up for what it is.
Well, last night I watched it again. It had been about ten years since I last saw the Sword and the Sorcerer. Would it hold up? Would all the nifty, ultra coolness of half-naked chicks, huge swords, and gruesome monsters I revelled in as a kid now be banished by my jaded, modern, hip matureness now?
No! Heck I loved it more than ever! This film rocked! Not a technical triumph, not a story of eternal value - it's a honest to God fun, fun, FUN film!! Before you get spoiled by the acting and special effects wizardry of Lord of the Rings, check this baby out pronto!
Even if your idea of a good time is watching a man dressed as a malevolent oak tree extend his branches and literally tear a woman's heart from her chest, I think you ought to pass on The Sword and the Sorcerer. [26 Apr 1982]
