In a post-apocalyptic wasteland in 1997, a comic book fan adopts the persona of his favourite hero to save his enthusiastic friend and fight a tyrannical overlord.
It's 1997. In a ruined post-apocalyptic world, the orphaned Kid survives on his own through drought-ridden nuclear winter, traversing the Wasteland on his BMX, scavenging for scraps to trade for a scant supply of water. When his perpetually chipper, pink-haired new best friend Apple is kidnapped by a minion of evil overlord Zeus, the Kid summons the courage of his comic book hero and prepares to deliver turbocharged justice to Zeus, his buzzsaw-handed sidekick Skeletron, and their vicious masked army.
This movie is absolutely ridiculous and I loved every second of it!
"Turbo Kid" lovingly lampoons old 80s sci-fi and the future that they really thought could have happened in the 90s. The synthesizer soundtrack, the cheesy effects and the story all add up to a film that isn't making fun of the 80s cheap B-movies but rather honoring them and that's one of the things that makes this feature so enjoyable. Additionally, the film has some really amusing characters who are all played by very talented actors and it has some very over-the-top and super silly gory action and comedy sequences that are incredibly fun to watch. My only complaint about the film is the fact the more innocent, G-rated jokes the film has at time are cringe-worthy but the rest of the film is very entertaining—even though it isn't for everyone.
I am talking nostalgia, a high you might not know what to do with. I saw this movie months ago and still gush over it. Perhaps it takes a certain type to feel as strongly as I do about this film. If you take yourself seriously, maybe it's not for you. It is quite the fix for those who grow up during a time when the world felt like one big laser tag arena. But it's so much more than that. Apple is one of the best character designs I have seen in a while. Her makeup and hair and wardrobe are simple but create this incredible visual. The action is phenomenal. Japanese-style violence. Not crossing the line, though, in my opinion. I tell people to watch this movie and no one I know has actually done so. It's okay. I can't wait. We can keep this for ourselves until everyone realizes how amazing it is and ruins it-- Boondock Saints...ahem. It's also the only electronic soundtrack I have ever fully purchased. There is a great little musical motif throughout, a simple series of tones which sort of remind me of Close Encounters--and some spring birds who hang around my house. I am saving the second viewing of this for a special time. It's worth cultivating. It's worth watching, you might say.
Working from a well-worn template, Turbo Kid nonetheless delivers on all fronts. The one-note characters you’ve seen a million times still surprise with solid performances and refreshing eccentricities thrown in for good measure.
