Dolly Dudman: The Life Story of a Great Lady

A biography of my maternal Aunt who was born in India and lived her life there during and after the Raj but then in her declining years followed her Muslim husband to the newly created Pakistan where she died in sad circumstances. She lived through six British Monarchs, born in Victoria's time, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II. Saw all the upheaval of the Independence Movement and the aftermath of the partition and despite everything, remained a great lady. She lies in an unmarked grave but this book is her memorial. She was descended directly from General Giles Stibbert who was a contemporary of Robert Clive and became the Commander in Chief of the British Army in India when the East India Company was in power. He had a wife and family in the UK but an "Housekeeper" in India with whom he had two children but unlike many, he provided for his "other" family and Elizabeth Stibbert, his daughter was well Educated and married a Tetley and then her daughter married a Dudman and the name became Tetley-Dudman. Augustus Dudman was Dolly's father who died five months before she was born, leaving my grandmother an 20 year old widow. My Grandmother then remarried and my mother was her youngest child from this marriage but my mother and my Aunty Dolly whom I called Mamma as opposed to Mummy for my natural mother lived most of their lives together and remained very close until death did them part! I owe her a great deal - my education, both scholastic and behavioural - how to run a home, set a grand table, entertain one's guests - all skills which seem to have been lost in our frenetic, modern world. I tried to pass these things on to my children although as usually happens, modern life took over and although they still maintain some things I do not know whether my grandchildren will do the same but that is life. I learned a little ditty when I was very young which always reminded me of Aunty Dolly "I knew a lady sweet and kind Was never face so pleased my mind I did but see her passing by And yet I love her - til I die!" She was sweet and kind and a lady through and through, devout in her faith and considerate of others. She eloped with a Muslim which caused a great scandal in her day but although she catered for his faith she never changed hers. This book is historical as all the events described actually happened although many of the things we witnessed have never been mentioned in books or programmes about India! Here's to a great and gracious lady!
