The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee.
Ip Man's peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family's honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. In the mean time, Gong Er chooses the path of vengeance after her father was killed by Ma San.
I saw "The Grandmaster", starring Tony Leung-Hero, Hard Boiled; Ziyi Zhang-Rush Hour 2, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Qingxiang Wang-Chinese Zodiac, Red Cliff and Jin Zhang-Jackie Chan Presents: Wushu, Undiscovered Tomb.
This is a martial arts movie that tells the story of the life of Ip Man, the man most famous for bringing Kung Fu to people's attention and, Oh yeah, he was also Bruce Lee's teacher. The story starts around 1936 in China-just before the Japanese invasion-and continues up until around the early 1950's, when he started teaching Bruce Lee. The movie opens with a beautifully choreographed fight scene in a rain storm. I say beautiful because Kung Fu is based on animal movements and when it is done properly-as it is here-it is beautiful to watch. Tony plays Ip Man and he trained about 4 hours a day for a year to be in shape, and it shows. During this time period, China was divided between the north and the south, as far as their martial arts cultures. Tony was from the southern part of China and Qingxiang was from the north. They were always trying to prove whose fighting abilities were better in those days-"My Kung Fu is better than your Kung Fu!", as the saying goes. Tony's abilities really were better. Qingxiang is getting older and wants to retire so he names Jin as his successor-which does not go over too well with Ziyi, Qingxiang's daughter, but in those days, girls were not considered in the running for those kinds of positions. The movie is also sub-titled, so bring your reading glasses. If you are interested in the subject matter, you should enjoy it. The only problem I had with it was when the story took a turn and focused a little too much on Ziyi and her problems. It's rated "PG-13" for violence, language and drug use and has a running time of 2 hours & 10 minutes. I really enjoyed it and would buy it on Blu-Ray.
The movie starts out somewhat orderly, but then midway it seems as if the director had a vision, a vision which made perfect sense in his mind but unfortunately to the outside world his work comes out as disorderly and really lacking any focus or consistency.
The scenes jump from story to story without proper context, new characters are introduced with minimal relevance to the already established characters, alas they do not get enough face time to actually matter.
In the end the actors are good, but the biggest flaw, and one that is quite hard to overcome is the awful directing.
The film, more likely to invite comparisons to the writings of Marcel Proust than the previous Ip Man films, is a gorgeous folly that never entirely emerges from its creator's head.
