Duncan MacLeod is Immortal, and must live in modern society, concealing his true nature while fighting other Immortals.
Taken from the film, Highlander, Duncan MacLeod, clansman of Connor in the film also finds he is being stalked by not only other immortals trying to kill him before the time of the gathering, but also a secret society of mortals who call themselves 'The Watchers' and also seem intent on killing him but "The Watchers" observe and record and never interfere. Duncan and the other immortals can only be killed by decapitation and often live for centuries.
This has to be one of the best made shows EVER on television. They don't make shows like this one anymore. They tried to extend the show with Highlander the Raven with Amanda as the lead character. She wasn't cut out for it. The scripts for this original series with Duncan Macleod were great, and they only got better after the 1st season. The flashbacks are remarkable, putting us in many scenes through Duncan's 400 year history, and some of the histories of other immortals he knows, including Methos from a 5000 year standpoint. To be honest, i wish they would have made the extended series with Methos instead of Amanda, people would have thousands of years of world history to choose where to put him and when to put him. I wish they made more, and i hope the new movie is more like the show. Lets bring it back :)
Few television series' that are based on movies live up to the original version, either because they simply don't have right qualities that made the movie great or they the people making the show just don't give a damn. "Highlander: The Series", however, is one of those rare exceptions. Based off of the original 1986 fan favorite and produced by same the executive producers William Panzer and Peter Davis, it continued the saga of the immortals, a race of beings destined to fight one another in sword fights in a centuries long event called the game and who can only be killed by decapitation, with the opponent taking their head and their power. In particular, the show centers around one such immortal named Duncan Macleod (Adrian Paul in his best role) of the Clan Macleod, a descendant of Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert who reprises his role for the pilot) from the first film. Born in the highlands of Scotland in 1592, Duncan has roamed the world for 400 years, seen many different events, and has fought in many different wars and many battles with other immortals. And that last part is one of the things that made the show great. You could count on almost every episode to feature a spectacular sword fight with the villain of the week, a battle of life and death, with Duncan Macleod emerging victorious from yet another trying ordeal and even more spectacular quickening.
Based on that, you might expect a show centering on such a plot to become boring or same old, same old, and the show might very well have become so. But, the truth is the show managed to constantly entertain and thrill for most of its run in large part because of the talent the show had. Adrian Paul was more than capable of carrying a show, bringing not only charm and charisma to the role of Duncan but also a strong sense of honor and chivalry, thus making Duncan Macleod one of the great television heroes. But it wasn't just Adrian's acting that made the show great; it was also due to the well blending of strong supporting actors, guest stars and villains, writers, and set designers and directors. You had Richie Ryan (Stan Kirsch), a young man who becomes a part of Duncan's world in a way he never imagined; Joe Dawson (Jim Byrnes) a member of a secret society of mortals called the Watchers who dedicate themselves to watching and recording the deeds and actions of the immortals; the always enjoyable Methos (the wonderfully charismatic Peter Wingfield), a 5,000 year old immortal and the oldest living of his kind; Amanda (Elizabeth Grace), an immortal who's had an on again, off again relationship with Duncan throughout the ages and who's not put off by an occasional high-value heist or two to make a living, and a slew of guest stars, villains and other supporting actors that added to the show every week.
Plus, one must also give credit to behind the scenes people, who not only managed to make things interesting in the present, but the past as well. Every episode featured dazzling historical flashbacks, flashbacks that were so good there isn't one where you didn't believe the characters weren't where the show said they were, be it World War I France or British Colonial India (these flashbacks are even more remarkable when you consider the fact that the show, because it was syndicated, had a much smaller budget than shows tied directly to a network). It was also a show that, like the original film, caused the viewer to wonder what would it be like to live indefinitely and witness the changing of the times? What kind of person would you become if you witnessed your time, your religion, possibly even your entire culture disappear into the mists of time? All this must be credited to the writers, led by creative consultant David Abramowitz, who had a lot to do with the magic of the show. Not to say, of course, that weren't imperfections; some episodes dragged, and one or two of them were pretty bad (the episode "The Zone" is a good example of this), not to mention the fact that the show badly lost steam in the last season, a thing that tends to happen to most shows in the end. However, that being said, the show did far more for the Highlander franchise than any of the sequels ever did, which, as a whole, weren't particularly great. For that reason, it's a show that all fans of action and fantasy should check out, especially before Hollywood subjects us to yet another remake! And remember, "There can be only one!"
When the producers of the first film made it, they didn't anticipate that it would be the hit that it was and spawn multiple sequels and television shows. There really hasn't been an official explanation for this, however when asked about it, the producers for the main television series have suggested that Connor didn't actually win the prize in the first movie, it was just a very powerful quickening. Fan theories explore the concept that Connor's was only one 'Prize' rather than the ultimate one. Immortals grow and age normally until they die for the first time and after that they never age, we see Immortals who are still children despite being hundreds of years old but we also see them as old men because they didn't die for the first time until they were that age. They can sustain massive wounds which heal almost immediately and if their injuries are enough to be fatal to an ordinary human they die but come back to life again a short time later. They cannot regenerate severed limbs etc as shown in S02E14 'Unholy Alliance I' and we know that when Ramirez cuts the Kurgan's vocal chords in the original film neither they nor the scar across his neck heal. They can sense one another's presence and also are able to detect when a mortal human is destined to become an Immortal. They can be killed only by decaptiation whereupon a nearby Immortal can absorb their knowledge and power through 'The Quickening'. They can also breathe underwater although they do need to eat and drink. Immortals can never have children even when they marry one another, although we see many adopt orphans and raise them to adulthood before faking their own deaths and creating a new identity. Immortals are forbidden to fight on holy ground of any religion. This was originally construed as just a tradition but in Highlander 3 we see the appearance of a spirit like apparition (similar to the one glimpsed in Highlander when Connor wins 'The Prize') which actually forbids it when 2 Immortals try. Combat between Immortals is always supposed to be one on one and using swords although we see some cheat during the course of the series. When a group of Immortals has amassed enough kills and the 'Quickenings' which accompany them they feel an irrestible urge to come together in what is known as 'The Gathering' to fight to the death. The winner receives 'The Prize', a new set of mental abilities coupled with the ability to grow old and have children should they wish to. Should only one Immortal remain out of them all they will be all-powerful. At first the answer is decisively no, Duncan is actually dismissive of the idea to Richie. However in later seasons we see Immortals cast illusions, read minds, exhibit mind control, prophesise the future, have psychic visions and out of body experiences and undergo spiritual cleansing using magical pools. We also establish the existence of demons and possibly of werewolves/shapeshifters. We know from the original Highlander film that when Connor wins 'The Prize' he gains the power to read and influence people's minds all over the world so it may be that other Immortals who exhibit special abilities have also won a 'Prize' at some stage. Highlander 2 postulates the theory that Immortals are actually aliens, exiles from the planet 'Zeist' who are youthed into babies and placed at different periods of Earth history. The directors cut of the film establishes that Zeist civilisation instead existed on Earth in the ancient past, suggesting that Immortals are indeed human but with added abilities. Notably Highlander; The Series and Highlander; Endgame establish that all Immortals are foundlings (abandoned babies adopted by strangers). 646f9e108c
