Once the final lacquer coats have cured, most finishers begin wet-sanding with fine-grit finishing papers. You want to remove the "orange peel" texture before buffing 1500 and 2000-grits are a must for synthetic finishes such as polyester and polyurethane. Even 1200-grit papers are a bit too coarse for a perfect rub-out on
You can easily see that the high spots that got sanded are now lighter, almost white. While the low spots still have gray guide coat in them. Blocking 24. Wet Checking. A great way to check your blocking progress, besides the guide coat, is by wet checking. Simply spray a thin layer of PRE painting prep on the panel to get it
16 Jun 2007 I always use cheapo spray paint but I am gonna buy the real stuff this time. My question is can I wet sand with the powder or will it run off? Thanks

Place a rubber sanding block with 320-grit wet/dry sandpaper on it into the pan. Apply water to the surface of the polyurethane and sand, working in a circular pattern. Wipe the surface with a clean cloth every so often to gauge progress.
2 Jun 2008 Read more about proper brushing technique in our free guide to all types of wood finishing! MYTH #2: Thin the first coat 50 percent to get a good bond. This is an old myth that probably got its start because of poor understanding of the role of primers used under paint, and sanding sealers sometimes used
12 Sep 2008 Does anyone use a guide coat of some sort when sanding out orange peel and sand scratches in clear coat? I am convinced that you need to start with I use a new spreader or a soft block when I'm wet sanding to clear the crap away to check the peel, or I just look at it if I'm da'n. Good lights and angles
21 Aug 2013 I have 5 layers of Minwax Wipe-on oil based poly (satin finish) on the table, having sanded with 220 lightly (in the direction of the grain) between each application. After the last coat, I let the table dry for 2 days, and went out this evening to try the final sanding/finish. I thought I'd try a wet sanding technique.
Step 1. For most of us, finishing means applying varnish, polyurethane, or paint with a brush. Sand the surface to 320-grit. When using open-grained woods, such as oak, ash, mahogany or walnut, fill the pores by applying a paste wood filler like J.E. Apply a finish of your choice and let it dry overnight.
