French college students, Marie and Alex, head to Alex's secluded farmhouse in hopes of studying for their exams without distractions. While settling in, a man breaks into the home and brutally murders Alex's family while Marie tries to hide herself from the killer. When the killer binds and kidnaps Alex, Marie follows him, attempting saving her friend and, along the way, running into some dangerous obstacles.
Best friends, Marie and Alexia, are driving out to a peaceful rural weekend to visit Alexia's parents in their secluded cottage, unbeknownst to them that a deranged and utterly sadistic killer is prowling the area, hacking and slashing for his perverse pleasure. As a result, in the dead of night, a brutal massacre will follow where none shall be spared except for the helpless Alexia who will end up as the madman's hostage. Inevitably, with Marie as the sole survivor, a sinister cat-and-mouse game will soon begin, as the young woman will do anything in her power to save her friend. But is this the end of the nightmare?
The debates and accusations towards Alexandre Aja's Haute tension (AKA: Switchbalde Roamnce) will never dissipate, that, particularly in the horror genre, is a given. Plagiarism charges and hostile bile vomited on the twist ending ensure it's a film unlikely to produce unity in horror circles.
Once viewed it's a picture that simply doesn't add up, thus it's a bit of a cheat, however, it's still a nail-biting experience as Marie (Cécile De France) attempts to rescue her best friend Alexia (Maïwenn) who has been kidnapped from the remote family farmhouse by a blood letting psychopath who has massacred Alexia's whole family.
Tale is unrelentingly grim and gruesome, pulsing with edgy atmosphere at every juncture. Dialogue is kept to a minimum, director Aja smartly letting the visceral shocks and palpable terror rule the roost. Production is stylish but not over glossy, so as to strip away the grainy feel of plotting, and the twin lead performances score favourably.
It could never hold up to a repeat viewing, that much is obvious, and "that" ending is understandably a cause for dissension, but it still has much to offer the slasher fan after a bit more than the usual teen stalk and slash trash. 7/10
What can I say – whilst I don't go out of my way to watch subtitled film this one is an enigma – captivating, surreal, gory, clever, stylish and the film work is breath taking! The special effects, the setting and the actors and actresses make this film what it is – a masterpiece
I am not one for gore (I would rather be scared) – but if you can get the gist of what's happening through squinted eyes when those bits are about to happen this is a must to watch! I was so into the characters and felt for them all and was on the edge of my seat and shouting at the TV for most of it. Spectacular visual effects especially the way the camera pans from the blonde guest to the father opening the front door at the beginning of the film to a strange visitor (Reminiscent of the quality filming found in Sam Raimi's evil dead which I adore) – so if you can ignore the almost excessive violence this film contains it will take your breath away and keep you in suspense throughout!!!!
Serial killing and other insanity in the French countryside, with ineptly dubbed English dialogue.
"Sara 'Perche' Ti Amo" by Ricchi & Poveri. "Runaway Girl" by U. Roy. "New Born" by Muse. "Superstar" by Sonic Youth, which is a cover of "Superstar" by The Carpenters. You can view the film in three ways:
(1) U.S. English Language Dubbed Version - everything is dubbed in English.
(2) U.S. Unrated Version - half of the film is subtitled, and half of the film is dubbed (which is how it was released in theaters).
(3) Original French Language Director's Cut Version - everything is in French.
The film itself is the same no matter which version you choose. The only problem with choosing the Original French Language Director's Cut Version is that the subtitles are not entirely accurate. There were lines added in the U.S. English Dubbed Version, so if you choose to view the film in French, the English subtitles will sometimes display lines that are not being said by anyone. For the US theatrical release, the film was rated R by the MPAA. To achieve this, the film had to be cut heavily. More than one minute of violence is missing in different scenes.
The Korean DVD is censored as well. Nearly 1 minute is missing in this version. Yes--it's loosely based on the novel Intensity by Dean Koontz. A soundtrack album featuring François-Eudes Chanfrault's electronic score was supposed to be released by Thrive Records in the United States, but it was ultimately canceled. On the composer's official Web site (http://personal.computer.free.fr/web/) a link is available to stream "Faustina Mauricio Mercedes Part IV." If you dig deeply enough through the coding, however, about 30 minutes of audio from the score can be downloaded. The 2005 US DVD of High Tension had to be retouched before its release. However, the content that had to be removed from the movie was not of a violent nature, as one might suspect. Instead, the Jack Daniel's logo was removed every time it could be seen. Unfortunately, we do not know why this happened and whether it was someone from Lionsgate or someone from Jack Daniel's who stepped in. a5c7b9f00b
