When a man (Robbins) believes he has discovered that his wife is having an affair with his boss, it sets off a chain reaction of events. First he wanders into a ghetto where a robber (Lawrence) tries to take his money at gunpoint, but instead sets a wild ride from California to Arizona. The two eventually become reluctant friends. Discussing robbery techniques, they decide to get back at the boss by robbing an office safe containing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Life is further complicated by another pair of robbers who chase the first two for infringing on their territory.
Let me say this first as it should be the first thing critiqued for a comedy: the humor here is good. This isn't all typical American family mainstream movie humor, there are some really good moments mostly in situational comedy. Just Oedekeker putting himself in the film alone is a hilarious thought but the useless character and attributed scene are just hilariously pointless, and therefor very meaningful to such a comedy. But that's a detail. It's actually got suspense, is strong structurally, and as most Oedekerk motion pictures (ahem...that don't have THUMB in the title...) this has meaning and is very humane. Globally, it's a great coming together of two radically antagonistic leads and, naturally, the characters they play, while the two villain characters that follow their symmetry is a funny concept - it's well written, funny, with a point and whether as a comedy or as a film with its own tension and developments, it's just a good, strong movie.
Two fine actors, Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence, are wasted in this predictable film.
The movie makes three gigantic mistakes. First, its premise is that Robbins comes home to find his wife in bed with her lover. But listen to the dialog in the first few scenes and you'll be able to guess what is really happening. Second, the film asks us to root for Lawrence, who makes a living robbing people because he can't get a job. And yet, Lawrence is obviously intelligent, and while this story line might have worked in the Great Depression or during Jim Crow, it doesn't in 1997. Third, as soon as we discover Lawrence's area of giftedness, we can guess how things will turn out for him.
Despite these major flaws, "Nothing to Lose" boasts a great performance by Irma P. Hall, who gets laughs by slapping around both Robbins and Lawrence. Too bad she didn't slap around the people behind this movie.
