Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.
Dr Victor Frankenstein dies frozen to death and the creature buries him at the cemetery of his family. However he is attacked by demons but he kills one of them and Gargoyles save him and take him to a Cathedral where the Gargoyles Order gathers. The Queen of the Gargoyles Leonore keeps Dr. Frankenstein's journal together with the treasures of the Order and gives the name of Adam to the creature. Then she explains to Adam that there is an ancient war between the Gargoyles that are angels and demons under the command of the Prince Naberius. She also invites Adam to join the Gargoyles in the war against demons, but Adam prefers to isolate in a remote place. Two hundred years later, Adam returns and finds a modern society. Soon he learns that Naberius has the intention of creating an army of soulless corpses to be possessed by demons. The scientist Terra is researching a process to create life and Naberius is seeking Dr Frankenstein's journal to help Terra and raise his army.
OK, this is not an Oscar contender. It doesn't answer any of life's burning questions. It strays a LONG way from Mary Shelly's original 1818 story. That being said, if you approach this as, it's just a movie that's based on a graphic novel, it's a fun way to kill 90 minutes. It's got Frankenstein's creature, gargoyles, demons, LOT'S of CGI, lots of action, and who WOULDN'T want to watch Yvonne Strahovsky (from TV's Chuck). Interestingly, the creature is given the name Adam, by the gargoyle Queen. This was the name the creature chose for himself in Shelly's original story. This is one of the few movies I've ever seen that referred to his true name. If you've ever read the original book, by the end of the story you feel pity for the creature; he's somewhat redeemed and justified here by turning him into a reluctant superhero, who's tasked with saving the human race, despite the human proclivity to shun him.
The movie I Frankenstein was like anything I expected. When I started to watch the movie I thought it was going to be more confined within the original story of Frankenstein, but I was in for a surprise. They basically idolized a monster story that has been around for ever and made the character and the story into complete hollywoodness.
The beginning did fill me in about what was going on, but in the first few minutes of the movie I saw demons trying to beat up Frankenstein I was like what is this? Later in the movie they say that there was a battle for Centeries between angel gargoyle things against demons. That I thought was completely random, that could have been something that I could have come up with.
Why I did not give this movie a lower rating was because, they somehow made the random plot work, which surprised me even more was that they actors made the plot better. Also the movie production wasn't to down there it was a B movie in my option but that's just my option. Something like most b movies were somewhat predictable in what would happen next. I did enjoy the movie, it didn't life up to was it could have been.
To be fair, Eckhart is physically impressive and Bill Nighy and his raised eyebrow do their best in the role of demon leader Naberius. But I, Frankenstein shares something else with it's monster-hero, something much worse than its patchwork nature: The film is distinctly lacking in the soul department.
