Book descriptionHenry the Dog with no Tail tells the story of a dog named Henry who is very upset because he does not have a tail. All of his friends who have tails are able to use them for cool tricks but Henry feels as if he has no special talents and this makes him feel left out. One day, he decides that he needs to find a tail of his own once and for all. He sets out to go to the tailor thinking that he will have some tails. The tailor informs Henry that he does not sell tails but he offers to try to make him one. The tail that the tailor makes for Henry is way too long. He tries to show it off to his friends but they inform him that it is not a real tail because he cannot wag it. Henry then goes to a wagon maker to see if he can make his tail wag but he only sells wagons. Henry buys a wagon and travels to New York where he buys a battery and attaches it to his tail. This causes his tail to wag like crazy. He then goes home to show all of his friends but soon realizes that this tail is too much for him to handle. Finally he decides to take his tail off and hang it in a tree. From that day on he is happy to be the dog with no tail and never wishes for one again.This creative story displays a simple and common theme in a unique way. The tails of the dogs are depicted as something that can describe their personality and the fact that Henry does not have one makes him feel like he has no identity. The lesson that Henry learns in this book, about self-appreciation, is one that is very important for young children to learn. In the end Henry realizes that everyone has special talents and that he should not compare himself to others. The author often uses play on words to offer humor to the story such as the “tailor” and the “wagon maker”.The illustrator of this story also adds many elements, which help to bring it to life. The sketch drawings are very detailed making interpretation of the mood easier. The pictures also help to represent many aspects of specific scenes in the book through the use of displaying multiple drawings on each page. The movement of Henry’s tail is also creatively depicted through the swirling lines and the blurred images.
