30 May 2013 As Luther was awakening to a new understanding of justification, the Roman Catholic Church sent Johann Tetzel throughout Germany. Tetzel, a Dominican friar, was tasked with selling indulgences that would raise money to rebuild St. Peter's Basilica. Indulgences were dispensed by the church as a
2 Jun 2016 Put differently Tetzel was selling indulgences for the benefit of dead people. He was also, however, selling indulgences for living people. And in that sense, he was not running afoul of Catholic Church policy. In The History of the Popes, beginning at page 348, Ludwig Freiherr von Pastor tells us why:.
The Catholic Church sold indulgences in the late medieval period, and their sale motivated Martin Luther to present his "95 Theses." To this day, even the Roman Catholic Church condemns his extreme claims. The Catholic Encyclopedia, which still supports indulgences as Christian doctrine (a little

Papal Bull – official letter of instruction issued by the Pope concerning a given subject. . which the Catholic Church based its belief in the buying and selling of indulgences. A greater question arose as and Martin Luther was openly preaching against Tetzel and the sale of indulgences in general.
Similarly, the context of the Catholic Church's teaching must be taken into account on how she meant for the indulgences to be administered. really happened is that John Tetzel and other wayward preachers pretended or at least allowed themselves to be understood to be selling indulgences contrary to Church teaching.
7 Jan 2012 The Elector of Mainz undertook, for one-half the proceeds, the sale of indulgences in his own vast archiepiscopal provinces. Tetzel to the priests of his territory, exhorting them to prepare the minds of their parishioners for indulgences; and with these instructions he sent them pattern sermons, of which the
