The guide is slightly outdated, but virtually everything still holds true. While it's mainly geared towards nightmare difficulty, it still has many valid points

Dungeon Defenders Insane preparation tips That is not to say it won't make much of a difference, it just means that if you like you can focus all your hero skill points on your hero stats and have your armor focused on your tower stats to achieve a more balanced character. The higher the difficulty the better experience.
17 Jan 2012 When you get a good DPS build with a high health, go for the endless spires on nightmare. Build a harpoon and a spike blockade at each choke, either kill the ogre, or just stall him till he despawns (I had to do this once, I was stuck as my hybrid squire). Grab all the chests and BAM you've got mythical gear!
Ok, so I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Isn't the "new" insane difficulty the exact same as what end game hard was prior to this patch??? As in, they renamed old hard to insane, old normal to hard, and old easy to normal. You get the same iPWR gear as what hard used to give, and there is STILL a 30 iPWR

23 Oct 2011 If you're new to the genre or a game like Dungeon Defenders, the Easy difficulty is the way to go. You'll still get a good amount of experience, but you'll have some more space to get a hang of the UI, the flow of gameplay, and to toy around with how each Defense works against different types of enemies.
