The most important aspect of changing up correctly is what you do with the accelerator pedal. A lot of drivers will press the clutch and completely release the accelerator pedal whilst they change gear. They will then release the clutch prior to re-applying the accelerator. This technique will usually result in the car jerking
So pretty much in every manual i've ridden in (especially in lower gears), and including my own (2014 GTI) jerks a bit when shifting. I mean.im
Move the stick into first gear and ease onto the gas pedal while slowly releasing the clutch. Make sure to perform this transition smoothly, or the car will jerk. Ease off the clutch and onto the gas when shifting gears. If the revs are too low, shift faster into second gear before the revs drop too much.
Driving a car with a manual transmission can be tricky. Drivers learning how to drive a stick shift could end up with an unpleasant ride if they poorly execute the transition between gears, causing the car to jerk forward or backward. However, understanding how your car works could help smooth your drive. The key is timing.
From my experience in driving manual transmissions the past 26 years, whenever there's a jerking when shifting, especially when shifting into first or second gear, it has always been the clutch, and a new one fixed the problem immediately. If this is the case, don't be surprised when the new clutch seems a little difficult to
When shifting down to a lower gear, the RPM will be higher. If you can anticipate that and have the engine at the right speed as you smoothly bring up the clutch after the shift, you should find it doesn't jerk. Note that smoothly doesn't mean slowly- you can make quick, smooth shifts.
