HOW CAN YOU HELP prior to your surgery? Bring all of your current medications to orientation for review. Consult your physician for special instructions if you are taking routine medications, insulin, or blood thinners. Do not eat or drink anything for at least eight hours before your scheduled surgery.
Stop taking any herbal supplement, product, vitamin or mineral 14 days before surgery. Talk with your health care provider 4 to 6 weeks before your surgery about when you should stop taking DMARDs. In general, most people stop taking DMARDs 1 to 2 weeks before surgery.
These must be stopped 2 weeks before until 3 weeks after surgery.The only anti-inflammatory that can be used during this time is Tylenol (acetominophen). Other blood thinners such as coumadin must also be stopped but this would need to be done at the advice of your physician.
