A group of college students travel to a mysterious island to attend a rave, which is soon taken over by bloodthirsty zombies.
This film is a prequel to all of the The House of the Dead video games. Set on an island off the coast, a techno rave party attracts a diverse group of college coeds and a Coast Guard officer. Soon, they discover that their X-laced escapades are to be interrupted by zombies and monsters that attack them on the ground, from the air, and in the sea, ruled by an evil entity in the House of the Dead...
SPOILER ALERT-Based on a good video game that had good art and graphics, this movie managed to disappoint me on almost every level. The opening credits start with footage taken from the game with a "find edges" filter so that it is an almost indistinguishable, psychedelic mess. It would have been more interesting to have shown unadulterated footage from the game to show off some of the great art to people who aren't familiar with the games. Instead they do this in half-second clips inbetween scenes in the movie which is both cheesy and distracting. Or I could say it's stupid and unbelievably annoying but it really is all of these things. The bad acting we could put up with in zombie movies but the bad editing only accentuates the bad acting. Now, if this movie was supposed to take place on an island off of Florida, it looked more like Alaska. Young adults in their mid-twenties are going to a Sega-sponsored rave on the mysterious Island of Death out in the middle of nowhere. Does Sega really sponser raves on islands in the middle of nowhere? If so, you'd be way better off to skip this movie and go to the rave instead. The wealthy youngsters arrive 15 minutes late and so they pay a weirdo and his rather menacing captain a thousand dollars for a boat ride to this rave party. They argue over this instead of finding someone else to take them. This is supposed to be a bay in Florida, I guess boats were very hard to find there. The captain whose name is Kirk turns out to be one of the most enjoyable characters in this unenjoyable show. They give him a few hundred more dollars to run away from the Coast Guard. Now once they make it to the island, they find bloody clothes at the rave and no one else is around. This doesn't strike them as too odd so they quickly split up to explore and become zombie bait. Apparently, people have been disappearing by the dozens over the years on the island of death but this has never been investigated by the authorities. Captain Kirk temporarily saves the day by having a hidden arsenal on his boat. Now, the editing in the fight scenes with the zombies is atrocious and includes lots of multiple angle spin-arounds and slow motion with poorly made-up zombies which aren't frightening in the least. By this point I wanted to leave but since my family was watching another movie, I was stuck in this golden turkey to the bitter, boring end. There is an interesting lab where zombies are made but it is far too late in the film to add much interest. It's like spitting off the Titanic to keep it from sinking so fast. I love zombie movies but this sucked and it gives an already questionable genre a worse name. I give it a generous 3/10.
I rented this movie knowing that it would be bad. As long as a bad movie
hassome cool action in it, then I'm okay. This movie didn't have anything going for it. The acting was worse than a junior high play, the action was boring, the FX were bad... the list goes on and on. In one scene, a girl is "upset" that her friend just turned into a zombie, but the actress actually turned her head away from the camera because it appeared she was laughing. In a forest scene, you
actually see the springboard that is launching a zombie into the air for his super- zombie jumping ability. I even spotted the damn dolly track that the camera was on! The Matrix shots were overused to the point of irritability, and the director even openly called them "Matrix shots" in the commentary (nope, I only listened to a little bit). There are even shots from the actual game intercut as transtion points. That has got to be a new ultimate low. I've heard that Uwe Boll has his own production company. That's the only explanation I can think of, as to why this guy is even in the entertainment industry. This made House of 1000Corpses and the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre look Oscar worthy. 1/10
Director Uwe Boll wholeheartedly embraces the film's concept, and with some fancy editing and a pulsing soundtrack, the effect really is like watching a video game.
In 2003, House of the Dead, the first video game adaptation of Uwe Boll, who has gotten himself a certain reputation in this area, was released. The film is a mundane zombie flick with a shallow plot and a tendency to be trash. Five years later, Lions Gate has released a Director's Cut version of the film on DVD. The film was made into a comedy with new music, alternative scenes, outtakes and several overlay-commentaries - which is the reason for the subtitle "Funny Version" on the DVD's front cover. a5c7b9f00b
