Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.
Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions.

I never thought I'd ever give a movie a 1 out of 10 rating, because I've always believed that every film contains at least one good element that saves it from such a dire rating, but this one really does deserve it. The Divide can be described aptly in just one word - needless. I understand that a movie in the horror genre is supposed to scare and perhaps make you not sleep at night, but this one does so for all the wrong reasons.
It's hard to pinpoint the very thing that makes me hate this movie so much. It's certainly not the actors. I feel they did the best with what they were given - it's just that what they were given was truly terrible. I never grew to like or even slightly sympathise with any of the characters, even the ones who had to take the brunt of the abuse from the two main villains. It's a rare thing to see the most likable character of a movie (in this case, probably Mickey) incapacitated for the majority of said movie. The abuse and rape scenes aren't easily forgotten - the scene in which Marilyn is taken away hysterically screaming by Josh and Bobby to be further sexually abused is agonising to think about and something I just can't get out of my head.
All might have been forgiven had there not been so many gaping plot-holes. 1. Direct visual exposure to a nuclear attack with no ramifications (not even temporary blindness). 2. The immediate abuse Mickey faces despite being the one who must accommodate seven extra people. 3. The fact that he isn't released from his captive situation sooner, even though Eva must have been aware he could have been the one to save them. 4. The whole creepy children experiment thing (also, the fact that this plot line is never further explored but rather ends with them being sealed into their refuge). 5. How Mickey conveniently tells Eva about the gun (just to get the plot moving forward from the stand still it has come to). 6. What happens Eva at the end after she escapes the bunker.
The movie is something I found excruciating to sit through, constantly hoping that the discomfort I felt would eventually subside with a decent ending. It never comes. People may claim that it's a shock ending and therefore you're not meant to feel satisfied, but then why bother watching something so openly disappointing? Ultimately, you will be left feeling sick to your stomach, but of course, if misogyny, rape, verbal abuse, dismemberment, torture, madness and murder is your idea of a good time, look no further than this ugly little film.
This movie felt like it was rushing although it was a long, drawn out affair.
Now, I've read enough novels and seen enough movies to understand the premise that when society breaks down so go all the checks and balances that keep us from picking up a stick and smacking someone over the head with it because we don't like his eye colour BUT...I would like to believe that it would take longer than 5 seconds BEFORE we get to that point.
********Here there be Spoilers********* The ONLY actor that seemed to possess a modicum of sense was Michael Biehn and I'm not sure if he adjusted the script as they shot it or the writer and director had a long series of meetings to work on his part.
But even there, there were plot holes.
1. We have people WATCHING nuclear blasts without eye protection and not suffering any ill effects (even TEMPORARY blindness) before running down a bunch of stairs in an effort to try and get to safety.
2. You have a guy who has obviously spent years and tons of money on preparing a shelter in case of some catastrophe BUT he never bothered to develop a plan about what to do in case...a bunch of people show up and he is going to take them in?
3. The people get into this shelter and IMMEDIATELY begin doing some incredibly stupid things. Perhaps it would have made more sense to try and figure out what they just witnessed or even feel a sense of loss or destruction instead of trying to pick fights with the guy who let them IN?
4. This plot hole truly baffles me. Supposedly one of the people inside the shelter has the capability to transmit their location with a walkie-talkie to the outside world. Err...excuse me, but ever hear of a thing called EMP? It wipes out all electronics so, even if that short-range radio suddenly developed long-range capability, it would be fried.
5. Then for no particular reason we throw in some government or military types that are not coming in to save them but are there to steal their children? WHAT? REALLY? Oh, and as a small addendum, the main guy who owns the shelter has no weapons with which to protect himself and the others...well, that's not quite true, he does have a gun which he conveniently remembers that he has AFTER he loses a finger and that gun becomes a CONVENIENT device for the movie to progress.
This particular movie resembles an acting class doing an IMPROV scene of exactly this type of scenario. Everybody is trying to show their best WILD and CRAZY characters to try and impress the teacher but they don't blend anything together to make a coherent story.
I watched the whole thing hoping it would get better and even at the very end I half-expected to see something that might make it all GEL together but even there, it just LOST it and left me saying....WHY did I waste my time watching this?
In Xavier Gens's The Divide, the revolution will not be televised, only the degradation of human civility--and in a mire of clichés more toxic to the mind than the radioactive dust that causes everyone's hair to fall out in the wake of a nuclear explosion.
There are two versions of The Divide. Next to the MPAA-rated "R" version (for disturbing strong violence and sexuality, and for pervasive language) there's also an unrated cut that's featured on the US DVD and Blu-ray. Countries like Germany or the UK only got the R-Rated. a5c7b9f00b
